Server Outage

Post by dragon » Sun Dec 26, 2004 12:58 pm

Yep, as you all spotted, the server has been away for a few days. Will explain more later on as I need to leave this building, but basically I shut the server down in response to a major issue elsewhere on the network the server lives on - The server was shutdown to ensure its safety whilst we investigated the incident elsewhere - now we're back, and I have spent far too long at work recently (38 hours Thursday, 5 hours today, plenty more before anything happened!)

I'm off to rest for a bit and I'll catch up with you all later.

Sorry you missed Xmas on the forums. I'm sure you all had better things to be doing anyway!!!!

BTW: This server is awful to work on on its console ;-) - If you want to donate for the new server hardware, that would be appreciated - see the other thread :P
Cheers!

Sorry to hear about the problems Dragon. 38 hours work on Thursday is quite an achievment! Hope you're managing to relax now.

Thanks for taking the time to get it back up and running.

I'm not all that keen on 30+ hour stints at work either. Hope you had an ok xmas despite all of that.

If it's any help I was called out on xmas day because a pump got blocked up with leaves.

Wow, nice job then! I must admit I tried reaching the forum even while it was Christmas ;) But had full confidence it would be up and running without data-loss in some time :D

Must have been a lot of puzzling...

Hehe, you probably work for a "proper" company who pay you for it though ;-)

Unfortunately the >55 hours I've worked since Thursday doesn't get me anything (other than ratty through lack of sleep)

Got to be the worst Xmas on record :(

Sadly not. If you are on call or can't leave the site for any reason then that's it. You can ask for an 'extrodinary payment' but it's normaly fairly ordinary :( There is an ongoing 'discusion' about this (going on for a year). It's about to be decided one way or the other, because as of 2005 no one is going to respond to out of normal working hours phone calls.

It seems to be the way things are going these days.

It wasn't my worst xmas, but it's fairly close.

Seems not.

I don't get paid for callout
I don't necesarrily get time off in leiu (if it's been a long night of it, they graciously let you come in an hour late)
I don't even get my transport costs paid (i.e. it costs me money to do callout, if I have to travel to site)

My oncall life sucks ass big time
