ANNOUNCEMENT: forum moved to new server

Post by coyote1980 » Sat Apr 24, 2004 6:01 pm

Hi everyone,

short after having recovered from the horrors of the EZBoard merge we are proud to announce that the forum is now hosted on mr. Dragons server! If you notice any problems, please let us know here, we expect everything to be working wonderfull! Happy posting!

addition by dragon: Be aware that any posts made this afternoon will have vanished because we took the backup at about midday... sorry about that, there were maybe 6 posts, and I think 5 of those were wastegate ones...

Not in anyway you need to worry about. Why, feeling a little paranoid about something you said?

You're right, just noticed it too. Probably the old server was set to 'no caching' or something, could be very time-consuming to find out how to disable serverside-caching.

Think it's easier to just click a link back to the forum.

Also, can any kind of URL masking be set up on the main website, so that any links deeper than http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum are automatically re-directed to Gaz's hosting. I'm just thinking that any forum related URL's that have been posted in past posts will now no longer function properly (although I haven't tried it yet, to find out!).

Interesting "fact", King_j, but not correct; we are not registered with the data protection act, nor are we required to be - we don't enforce personal information to be present here, any personal information you submit here is entirely voluntary, as is your precense here, thus we don't have anything to do with DPA...

We do not process your information in any way, other than for the function of the board and data is only kept as live information and in a backed up form from time to time in a secure location, so I don't think you need to worry there... (since that would comply with the data protection act anyway)

Even if I did see all the messages and was able to attribute the text to a username, that in itself would also not be a breach of the act, as the data manager as it were (if we were required to be DPA registered)

The data itself is kept in a relational database, so any dumps will yield all the messages but not in any form that could be useful to anyone without a lot of manual work working out the relationship hashes. Thus noone is personally identifyable from this.

I would also like to add that if you *are* in fact worried about who can or cannot access any information you may or may not have ever submitted to an open forum using non encrypted links, then perhaps the Internet is not for you.

I hope this answers your query, Martin, and I also hope it informs you, King_j

Hmmm - the e-mail nonifications aren't working properly. I tried to read Gaz's "I'm not daft" comment, but just got:
The topic or post you requested does not exist
The URL in the e-mail was: http://volvo480.northernscum.org.uk/for ... 0967#30967

Ben.
That's my fault - I modded the SMTP settings of the forum to try and get
better throughput, and I posted that answer as a test, but it didnt work, so I set the setting back and tested again, meaning there was a double post. I then deleted the duplicate post, which would have been the one the email referenced, hence the error you see now.

I'd like you to show us all exactly where that was said.

But I implore the old Internet addage upon you: If you don't want your data to be seen, keep it off the Internet...

I find this entire sub-thread a little amazing; in essence nothing has changed... It changed server, yes. So what? As far as you are concerned, the same people have the same level of access to the data as they ever did - nothing's changed there...

Actually that's not quite true - one thing that has changed, is that the server that now holds the information is more secure than the webhost it came from; the old host allowed any old IP to connect via a whole host of insecure protocols. The current server does not allow connections other than for port 80 and port 25 from anyone who is not on a speific IP in a specific firewall access rule.

So only web traffic and emails (Sending of) are allowed to access the server.

So what about ftp access? You said it's backed up but where and how is this done. I'm not being a pain (am I) I just like to think the forum is safe from fire/dragons/storms/ailens/blah blah and cos i'm a geek I guess

& also I'm cool with the whole message thing. Just don't go reading mine ;)

Now I get pissed

can you brits please calm down and relax, You are known abroath to be afraid for any progress. Give it a chance, will you ?

stay of dragon's back, show some gratitude

In fact, the forum is still the same : like the same admins....dragon is just an extra. this will not mean any real changes, does it, coyote ?

what about all these "geekish" details ? Relax, be patient, you will be astonished

I really think king _I has to apologise, or at least dim what he said.

lets all keep being happy with this multicultural site. its ok , its all gonna improve.
luck,
