How to illuminate the info centre selector switch

The Volvo 480 looks good as is, but if you have the desire to give it a more personal look you can find out what others did to their 480 and be inspired.

How to illuminate the info centre selector switch

Post by Ally » Tue Oct 25, 2005 12:43 pm

OK, 'how to' illuminate the info centre selector switch...

Things you need:
  • 1x DC Plug 2.5mm/5.0mm (Maplin order code: L49AY)
    1x Single-Hole-Fixing 2.5mm DC Socket (Maplin order code: JK10L)
1x 12/1.2W instrument bulb (Don't buy from Maplin - they cost a fortune!)
or 1x Wire-Ended Filament Type Bulb (Maplin order code: WQ13P)
    Some insultaing tape
4 cm² of green gel (I used a bit of some old packaging material)
2x 'Scotch' locks (cable lock connectors)
    Some insulated copper wire
Tools you need:
  • A pin punch or something to mark where to drill
A minicraft drill or dremel is handy
    Various sizes of drill bits
    A soldering iron
1. Use the pin punch to mark the inner ends of the position markers and then carefully drill holes about 1.6 - 2.0 mm diameter. I ended up enlarging to 2.0 mm 'cos I felt they weren't showing up well at the smaller size. Try for yourself, you can always make them bigger. The Mk2 that Sally has also features countersunk holes but I'm not sure whether this looks better or not. Having drilled the holes you'll probably have to retouch the white marks using a paint pen.

2. Drill a hole in the top corner of the circuit board for the power socket taking care to position the hole so as not to damage any tracks and not to go to near the edge (there is room).

Image

3. Mount the socket into the hole and then solder the bulb directly to the tags of the socket so that the filament will be positioned vertically above the shaft of the switch.

4. Cut the gel to fit inside the housing with a strip bent back at the top and around the adjustment hole to prevent white light leakage. Fit this into the housing using a couple of little bits of blu-tack to hold it in place. You can add a small piece of white paper big enough to cover the top three holes which will help even up the intensity of the lighting (due to the position of the bulb).

5. Solder two wires to the power plug and use 'scotch locks' to attach the wires to the 12V lighting feed to the clock.

6. Finally reassemlbe the switch (you may have to file off part of the back corner of the housing to allow the socket to fit in) and fit back into the dashboard. With a bit of luck, when you turn on the ignition your info centre selector switch will light up and nothing will go on fire! :-D

Cheeky b*****d! :P

I had problems soldering the legs of the bulb 'cos of the metal they're made of. (That my excuse and I'm sticking to it! ;-))

I started the mod, I'm using a 12v dash light from 740 which comes with a bulb socket so I had to mod that by grinding some plastic off.

Can you not run the 12v from one of pins on the pcb?

That's a very good question Mr Holmes...
...one that I don't know the answer too! :-D

Get out yer multimeter and you'll soon find out!

I'd thought along the lines of it just being a switch (ie passive elctronics) that wouldn't need any power supply but never went to the bother of checking. The other reason I used the socket is that it provides some handy support for mounting the bulb in the right place...

Every info centre (dead or alive) deserves this treatment! ;)
