Side Strips

The Volvo 480 looks good as is, but if you have the desire to give it a more personal look you can find out what others did to their 480 and be inspired.

Side Strips

Post by jamescarruthers » Mon Apr 05, 2004 7:34 pm

Ok my car is of the non-body coloured bumpered type. But she's getting re-sprayed fully so I'm gonna get the bumpers done and make her look lovelly. Thought I'd get the later model strips on the side of the car too... but Volvo want £90+ per side so thats a no go-er.

Anyone ever taken off the side strips (colour coded ones) and not broken them? I am gonna get down the scrap yards this week sometime, but thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

You mean the chunky plastic strips down the sides in the middle of each door etc? If so, mine are coming off my car, as I think they can cause a rusting problem by holding water into the door itself, so I'm losing mine... you can have them if you can persuade DBS to get them off without breaking them ;)

hahahahahahaha. well, turns out they are held on with the same stuff as bonds your windscreen in. When my red cars door got damaged (another story) I went to the garage and they happened to have a door the same colour and not faded either, but it had the big bump strips on it. you _may_ be able to get them off the door wthout cutting them ( as per the book of lies), but the force required will probably damge them. The small wing ones may be okay, its the long door one that will be more likely to cause problems What i would recommend doing is using one of those long disposable snap off knives and slide it down behind it, to try and cut the bond. if you manage to get them off, you are then left with the bond attatched to the door, which will not come off easily-in the end i had to get the orbital sander on the go and respray the door anyway
There is a groove in the door behind the strips too,(for strengthening??) about an inch an a half wide and 5-10mm deep.
The thin black strips are held on with an adhesive foam strip, and come off piece of piss. (I took one off to see if i could go without them, but then saw that groove and stuck it back on again. (don't use the trim adhesive from halfords, its crap)) You could spray those, i did it on my silver 440 and it looked great.

door stripes

Post by hjkort » Mon Sep 18, 2006 8:39 am

When stripping an '88 black with red striped 480, the stripes came off with some brute force, but are not damaged at all.
They are kept in place with some dots of elasto.bonding material...
So it can be done, but getting the bonding dots of the car is a different problem...

Early cars only had a few small dots of sticky stuff. The later cars are completely sealed on!
