Shocks

The Volvo 480 looks good as is, but if you have the desire to give it a more personal look you can find out what others did to their 480 and be inspired.

Is it OK to run standards on a 40mm drop?

If not, why not?

Short but sweet question! ;)

EDIT: Put it here, cos its styling, but I guess it was prob meant to go under tuning and tweaking?! :dunno: If so, sorry mods!

Anyway...would NEW standards do? If not, what should I be looking for? are there special lowering suited ones?

What about these?

And perhaps...should I think about changing anything else? EG, Lower arms?

I've dropped mine 30mm on standard shocks and the only problem I've got is the front end bouncing a little when I come off the throttle at speed. Standard shocks should be fine although they won't last as long before they get lazy.

'And' its a totally different experience driving a lowered 480 to standard, believe me! I would invest in a good quality sports-bra ;) I have :D

Thanks for that eEm, really appreciate the reply! I will risk it then! If worst comes to worst I can change them at a future date! (After I have saved a few pennies!! )

And I think the sports bra is far more important than shocks!! LMAO

Where?!?!

The only sarcasm above is the fact that somehow with my lack of double D's I wouldn't need a sports bra!!

I'm being over-sensitive! "wrist flops over" oooooooh

Seriously though, you're gonna love the corners but hate the bumps, and its worth considering replacing all the bushes, drop links and fitting shorter shocks if you keep the stiffer springs on for any length of time.

I'd stick with Sachs tbh, not very impressed with the Delfi bits I've got for the Laguna in the past, Yank Company, part of Lockheed, we've all heard about American build quality, but for that price who cares. Fitting rear shocks is a 30minute job anyway.

Esta- I was running standard shocks on the 480 with a 40mm drop. The shocks were a bit knackered anyway, so I got some KYB Excellence shocks, Oil Filled. They were nice and firm but still comfortable combined with the springs. Is it the KYB springs you have? If so it'd be an identical setup to mine. Even Catgroom commented on the how comfy the ride was for a lowered car.

Can't remember how much I paid, but I got them through my Uncle as he has a garage so got them a bit cheaper. Should be able to find them online though. I know what it's like running a car and how little money you have most of the time (since not owning one I've realised how much money i do actually earn ), but I think when coming to things like suspension, thats getting constant use, you get what you pay for. Unless I knew it was a subsidised company, I'd always pick a named brand over a lesser named brand...

Hope that was a little help anyhoo! :D

Hey dan the 480 man! Thanks for that comment as well! Yes I am usign the KYBs, so this is going to be immense!! I cant wait!

In that case I will wait until I can have enough money for a decent brand and do it properly. You are right...money and an interest in cars just dont mix lmao

Esta the stock shocks are ok but you should cut the end off the rear conical (upper) bump stop or you willl bottom out rather quickly. Yes a lowered 480 does stick to the ground as if it had suction cups on its tyres.

@GJ: Thansk for that, but as she may be going off the road soon I will be doing it all properly I think! If i still have a job to pay for the shocks lmao! Bless this recession! And damn you government! :P

on bad roads like in here, the original shock tend to bottom out. Just change them to a bit stiffer and thats it. The ride is harsh after that but it does stick to the ground.

on the BM I was told to buy lowering shocks and decent springs so I did.

It cocks it up if you don't.

However on the 480 i used decent bodge standard shocks with Pi spring (too bad) but it was very good.

Shame the wish bone bushes are rubbish along with poor wishbones made of paper. I remember Matbat bending the wbone while driving around the car park. lol

Thinking about changing the front wish bones while I am at it anyway. Think this is a good idea Martin?

If the bushes are split. Look at the subframe where the wish bone goes in.
