front number plate

The Volvo 480 looks good as is, but if you have the desire to give it a more personal look you can find out what others did to their 480 and be inspired.

front number plate

Post by Rachel » Wed May 10, 2006 9:06 pm

After a shunt into another car from being hit in the rear by a Merc  , my front number plate holder is broken. I wondered whether anyone has used or seen different front plates other than using the holder? Maybe an oppurtunity to do something a little different?!

I thought about just fixing the plate straight to the bumper, but when the new shiney backing plate arrived i had to stick it on! Only £20 something from volvo i think.

Hi there,

I think they made two different numberplate holders for the 480. My everyday car has a typical looking one, but my spare car has normal looking one, altough it's shape matches the frontbumper.

Maybe it's got something to do with the old en newer types. In that case, I may like the old one more than the new one :?

My brother shunted the old ES head on into my 440 killing it off. He broke the number plate mount so we just attached the number plate to the front of the bumper which works ok, but the plate needs to have a little give in the middle as the bumper has a sharp angle in the middle.

Not sure if I prefered it or not, but I kept the other two as is as I generally prefer to keep it factory.

My girlfriends mum just got a Chrysler PT Cruiser and brought it over to ours. The front number plate holder is very similar to on the 480 with the back part curved and the front straight.

Don't know if it'll definately fit but was thinking about giving it a go. :)

I was toying with the whole numberplate thing a while back, so i jumped on photoshop and just had a little play...

Not brilliant and not legal either (although i have seen cars driving round with tiny numberplates for months where i live and they still have them on :? ), but was just interesting to have a play and see what it could look like...

Some good thoughts there Dan ... me, Rohan and Paul were talking about this just the other day.

Me and Rohan came to the conclusion that if you left the actually letters/numbers the same size, then just trimmed around them, it would look so much better! Then it would fit perfectly straight onto the bumper!

Does anyone know the UK legislation regarding the size of number plates?

tiny plates are mostly to find on USA cars, alfa romeo 147 has the number plate on the left front side. just leave them in the middle, it's the original place and nicer!

ive got tiny plates on my MR2 but they are legal cos its a jap import. imports are allowed to have plates that fit the bumper recesses which in Japan and the US are smaller than the uk.
Tiny plates on UK cars are a bit of a no no, i'm afraid!

Bikes don't need front plates... Jap and US imports can have smaller plates... WTF?! Why don't they just make up their minds, if they have to be uniform, it should be for all motorists, otherwise make them optional. I think the front plate really spoils the Alfa lines.

I like blinky number plate under front bumer.
I was thinking about for a while but it can cover the radiator and makes engine overheated.

My Turbo was straight onto the bumper and it looked as if it was the original position.
