Roll Cage

Post by Benji » Sun Dec 05, 2004 9:12 am

Hi,

I am in the next few weeks about to hopefully start building a roll cage into my 480, and was wondering if anyone has any images of a cage in a 480 for inspiration and ideas.

thanks in advance

Benji

Benji there is a great couple of blokes who do mad stuff very near you, i used to live in new york near tattershall .if you head for coningsby from horncastle when you get to gibbet nook petrol station turn left then go straight down the road dont bear right for the MOD bomb dump and in about 1/4 mile past the bear left there a cxouple of guys who like fabricate a 737 engine in a trike 22 feet long with honda cbx 900 pissed around with a 12 litre two stroke engine and demons with fibre glass and mig tubular welding. also Finneys garage in coningsby in the 1980's cut a morris minor in half and a capri in half and had a moogy front and a capri back in gloss black with a v8 in looked mega.

cheers felyx (tim) found memories of the yellow bellies

p.s have you taken it to cadwell park open day?????

There never is a shortage of people doing crazy engineering round here i think its something in the water. I will be making the cage myself, i was just curious where other people had used as mount points.

It is destined to go to cadwell next year, took my puma there many times and had a complete riot. Its a fine county with a great race track and some crazy roads as well.

ah well , its not that brilliant of a county ! although if you do build the cage yourself youll need RAC certification etc - its not something to be taken lightly - youll also need to make it out of the correct material hence the RAC certification - Good Luck

I only need RAC certification if I use the car for anyform of motorsport? I only intend on using the car for track days. I was thinking of using something like 4130 in about 45mm - 50mm and a 2.3 to 3mm wall thickness, and tig weld it all together.

well , itd be a waste after if you didnt enter into any competition after doing all that work . Altho certification can be just bureaucratic tape - get a spec from somebody so that you can get it certified if necessary - just think that some people may want roll cages in the future ? get me drift

I keep my rolls in the breadbin. Not got the security of a cage, but sheffield is a low bread-crime area.

Ah I see your thinking there, a wise word indeed, thanks for that, does the cage have to be certified for hillclimbs and sprints?

There are no track day pics yet but when there is, i will post them, it is a 2.0l es, interior is all but gone now, and my seat and side mounts come this week. Will try and borrow a camera of a mate and take some progress pics if people are interested.

i think for hillclimbs and sprints , IF you have a cage it must have a certification - which would come in the MSA logbook , but , you might not need a cage for some events , best apply for your license , youll get the blue book which will have all the details , you can then compete against me in the volvo speed challenge .

Is the Speed challenge run by the Volvo owners club? I love the idea of competing against other Volvos. Been thinking about this all day, and i cant think of a reason why not. Are you driving a 480 in this event?

I guess it is time i applied for that licence. :D

i shall be in me 740 turbo !! - yes its run by the volvo owners club - so you need to be a member there - you dont necessarily need a competition licence for those events , since they may be club subscribed , but , i would get one so that you can do the night rallies aswell .
