The 480 is strange like that, it doesn't feel unhappy to be doing that sort of speed.

The only other car I had that would do that sort of speed was a Honda Civic CRX. Above 135 MPH it used to get very 'twitchy' and would try to drift around the road, quite frightning at that sort of speed

Quite why the 480 doesn't do that, I don't know since they are both more or less the same shape. Plus the Honda has by far the more advanced suspension setup (double wishbone independant all round). In fact the 480 seems to do as well slightly lowered, with standard shocks, as the Honda with koni shocks and Honda lowering kit (expensive since it includes a new set of upper wishbones and tie rod).

The only thing that annoys me about the 480, is that the rear suspension craps out on corners, that's not the sort of thing a front wheel drive car should do!

Hi Rpruen

Post by sr480t » Sun Oct 31, 2004 1:31 am

Hi Rpruen, just thought i would mention that i had a good stretch of road near my house and you could get about 90mph on the corner and then you had a bit more road that i got upto 110mph, but then you had to slam on the breaks but that was on a slight bend and yes the back end was quiet twitchy and scary under harsh breaking, so i took out a few psi from the rear tyres and under breaking it didn't bounce around as much as before, i know everyone will now say how bad it is for the tyres and they will wear uneven now, but when i got the 205/45/16 then i could put the correct amount of psi and they are perfect for me. 136mph (indicated)

Post by felyx » Sat Nov 06, 2004 8:19 pm

136MPH (indicated) car is 1989 turbo 123,000 miles shagged out knackered clutch and shocks, but that will be resolved soon.

cheers felyx, my goal is 150mph by end of febuary, and have a friend who does reliable D.I.Y nitro kits for 125BHP of 30 boost its about £150

that should make it 165 with 205 70 15's and a jack up kit
140mph for £175 just test the brakes

Erm.... Nitrous is ok for 1/4 mile, but forget it on the road. It runs out as well, where as there are other things that don't. It will also rip the 480 gearbox apart. Plus you need to get the mixture of fuel and NO right, otherwise your engine is toast.

150 MPH? That's easy then, just get an MBC (don't get a bleed valve, they don't work with the 480 very well). The ECU mod will also do that, and it will get there quicker.

Putting big wheels / tyres on the 480 will likely stuff up the handling, and that's something that is particularly good about the car. Lowering and the like are likely to get better all round results.

nitro just for turbo spool up

Post by felyx » Sun Nov 07, 2004 10:54 am

i was just going to use the NITRO for turbo spool up with a 15lb bottle this last a couple of weeks, there many many ways to rig up nitrous, and fitted as a lag reducer is the safest and longest ladting, when people do a 3 stage nitrous this would be the stage one part of, as soon as boost at turbo are at a pre determinded PSI then the NITRO solinoide switches off this would make 0-60 good for 5.5 secs. anyhow rupen i'm definately going to have you do do my ECU and noticed somebody else had used SAAB 9000t injectors, this will be definately good for starters. just wondering about how long it will take to get it totally mechanically up together before turquise respary. definately not to everyones taste, oh yeah and PIMP black windows too already for my massive european tour in april

Got 112mph on the M58, then serviced it the next day (new oil, plugs, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter) and ot 118mph on the same stretch of road.

just for fun, my other cars; the 1.3 Austin Allegro got up to a staggering 108mph, after I did some fidlling with the A+ engine

Lambretta Li125 - 68mph. just before It ran out of fuel, and the throttle cable then snapped whilst starting it again afterwards :kill:

Get 128mph out of my 1.7s regularly down the A38 on from Sheffield to Brum. Just on the bit at the end from the new M6 toll down to the Asda roundabout is defo the best place to get a top speed. Ive been coming down there with my foot on the floor in evey car ive had for the past 3 years and NEVER once seen the police.

I've got about 120MPH with my 480 2.0i

I got to 130 with my '86 360GLT 2.0i which was much more quiet and safe feeling at 120+.

The dash in my 480 wobbles above 100MPH

Its best round corners anyway....

i thought that things like progressive controllers and fogger systems mixed the fuel/no2 correctly so you basically dont just dump a shite loads of laughing gas in the pot?
seen some systems that mix the lot in the fuel pipe i think, rather than direct port injection.
i used to do the 1/4 against a guy called trevor langfield at long marston in Glos, many years ago....he makes no2 systems now...think his company is called wizards of nos.......up here anyway, in doncaster.

Its way more than 120, when im doing 125 the revs are at around 4,700. I'll do my best to get you a more exact speed for 5,000rpm on my next journey.

I easilly got to 140 on the speedo last night at an undisclosed location with an undisclosed (hi Lee (oh damn!)) member in the car in the T4 - Think GPS said it was 130 real, but I bottled it when unrecognised vehicles appeared on the horizon in front of me - would have easilly gone through 150 (indicated) I reckon.

Steve-o, you have an S model, which is at least 93? Therfore you will have a different gearbox than the 1987 model. The difference in revs at speed between Edds old 91 car and his 93 with the ES engine in it was massive, due to the (slight) differences in torque output, and the gearbox.

Arrr, i see, my knowledge of the 480 increases, i apologize! You must let me know if any of yall have any timber decay or damp problems and i'll come round and give u a quick lesson so as to try and rectify some credibility!! (im on a placement year from my degree with this company www.ridoutassociates.co.uk)

As for getting a more precise top speed, Im not totally sure what speed 5,000 rpm is, but 4850 = 130mph!!! Had a late night (2am) trip from sheffield to chesterfield last night, so as i come down the A61 chesterfield bypass (for those of you that dont know its just on big dual carriage way with a hill at the end) naturally the foot was to the floor. Must admit i was a little nervous as my tyres are as soft as!! So yes 130mph in a 1.7s (1993).
