Someone with a B18FT without powersteering and AC?

Hi,

I am currently removing weight from my 480T -88 to increase performance and have just removed the powersteering pump, AC compressor and alternator. While going through the Haynes manual I noticed an image where they showed a B18FT engine with just the waterpump and alternator on the belt connected to the second hub of the crankshaft, hence I am assuming that this is nothing unusual. I am looking for information on a couple of things.

1. There must be another mounting bracket for the alternator. How does it look?
2. Do these engines use the vibration dampener?
3. What is the product code/name of the alternator and belt used in this setup?

I would be very interested in pictures on how it looks when it is set up like that and exchanging information with someone over Skype if possible.

Best regards, Björn (Sweden)

Yes the vibration damper is kept.

Yes there is another type of mount for the alternator.

I should have a spare of this and if I can get the time I will photgraph the set up.

The alternator for AC cars has a haigher output and this is the only difference in the alternator.

I have not worked on a 480 that is so old and there may be other differences.

Much appreciated if you get the time to take a picture of it.

When I am talking about the mount for the alternator I mean the thing that bolts directly to the block and has the dampener connected to it, to avoid any confusion.

There is a difference between the alternators and that is the pulley, when running with an AC it connects with a V-belt to the AC pulley and it has an internal fan for cooling. The other alternator has a pulley that fits the ribbed belt and has an external fan for cooling.

Thanks for the quick response, Björn

Hi,
I've found a good picture of the mounting bracket and alternator with internal fan in my files ... :hopping:
http://480info.de/images/bilder/extern/ ... rnator.jpg
http://480info.de/images/bilder/extern/internal_fan.jpg
The housing is just wider than in the model with the fan outside.

There are pulleys with 3 ribs, used in combination with AC, and one with 6 ribs, but I am not sure if they were interchangeable. As the powersteering always had 6 ribs and without AC powersteering, alternator and water pump be driven from one belt, you will need an alternator with 6 rib pulley, the 6 rib pulley for water pump and the the corresponding belt. Crankshaft pulley should be one with 6 ribs already, as it driven powersteering before.

Additionally engine mounting is different, as power steering will be screwed there

In case you don't want to mount powersteering again: matching belts should be available for 440/460, as they were build without powersteering in contrast to the 480.

For a 440 without a/c and without power steering, you need a 6PK850 or 6PK853 belt. It only drives the alternator and water pump. So 6 ribs are default and if your alternator has 6 ribs also (most have), it should be possible to use a 440 steering rack without power steering.
Less weight, less power loss because there is no hydraulic pump, so for track use it's definitely a good idea!

I have a 440 steering rack which I am rebuilding at the moment, cleaning, new grease, new bearings etc. and that will replace my original powersteering rack.

My original alternator has a 3-rib pulley and I do not think the pulleys are interchangable. The alternator itself sits to far to the center of the engine bay and even with a 6-rib pulley on it, it would still be missing 1 cm or more when aligning the belt. I need to have that specific mounting bracket and an alternator from a 440 (I assume?).

It should look like this picture when assembled (do not worry, its a link to an image on my NAS): http://armarium.synology.me/photo/#!Alb ... 352e4a5047

The waterpump does not use a ribbed pulley and is driven by the flat side of the belt because it needs to go in the other direction than the crankshaft.

Anyone has some pictures from a few different angles on this setup?

Thank you for the replies, Björn

Well, it's correct that water pump is driven by the flat side of the belt, nethertheless the impeller is wider for the belt with 6 ribs.

might answer some of your questions :D

The pieces are coming together, belt is ordered, found a few alternators that fit (like this one: http://480info.de/images/bilder/extern/ ... rnator.jpg).

BUT, the alternator bracket from a 440/480 without AC and PAS, seems hard to come by. Called a few scrapyards today but no luck. There are two brackets in the scrappers onlineshop but they are bigger and have more fastening points in them meaning it comes from a car that had more than the alternator bolted to it. (https://www.bildelsbasen.se/se-sv/Volvo ... %B6r/Alla/)

Anyone has one or two of these brackets collecting dust on a shelf? (Like this one: http://480info.de/images/bilder/extern/ ... rnator.jpg)

Couldn't you get a machine shop to modify an existing one if the one you want is hard to get? It wouldn't be a big job to machine off what you don't want from it and for aesthetics you could just blend the machining marks with the casting on a linisher and shot blast the whole thing. Bit of trouble and expense but it would get you the result you want. Shame your not nearby, I'd offer to do it for you for a token payment or a couple of 480 bits!

Losing the PAS sounds appealing. Are the 440 racks hard to come by?

I might have the bracket you are looking for but it will be in my shed of maximum density and it will be the weekend before I can get in and have a look. (weather permitting)

Elferink in the Netherlands has two:
http://www.elferink.nl/Volvo/4-Serie/Stuurhuis
"Stuurhuis" = steering rack; powered = "Bekrachtigd" and they have a separate section: http://www.elferink.nl/Volvo/4-Serie/St ... ekrachtigd so you can be pretty sure the others aren't.
There are lots of 440 on the breaker's yards here, so keep looking. :)

@Ade The question is if the depth of the different brackets is the same, so that the tensioning works as it should. It was easy for me to procure a 440 rack from the scrap (most scrapyards are linked together in Sweden via a website, have a look at the available racks: "https://www.bildelsbasen.se/se-sv/Volvo ... äcka/Alla/"

Thank you for the kind offer, Ade!

@glasgowjim I look forward to your journey into the dense shed, weather willing, meanwhile I will exercise patience and try the belt out with my current alternator =)
