Some kind if confounded trickery...

Post by cranna21 » Thu Apr 03, 2014 6:16 am

I have a 1.7ES S/R (can someone tell me what the S/R stands for??) and having recently put a random £15 cone air filter and a different pipe to give direct air feed to it the car now unquestionably sounds absolutely brilliant however gve her a good rag through the gears and in 2nd, 3rd and 4th at just above 3000rpm you would think a turbo kicks in! It just pulls like f***! It just goes and goes and goes, not only does it just pull well up to 4500rpm it seems to just keep accelerating with more fury the closer to 4500 you get! Am I the only one or is this standard? Has my eBay come filter made an improvement? Or did volvo design some kind of vtec rivalling magic?

In other news a job means I'm getting her decat-ed and taking the mid box out, the mechanic I use has assured me that because if the age (91) he can still legally MOT it, I'll just have to figure out what to do with the wee sensor on too if the cat... Any ideas so I don't have an engine warnin light? I don't like lights on my 47000 mile instrument panel :P

Cheers

I believe S/R stands for Sun Roof. It might refer to the Moon roof having been fitting after importation. :?
I have a N/A 1.7 too and love to just boot it. What your experiencing is Torque, Volvo tuned the Renault engines for more torque. After about 3500rpm the power will start to come in. That's how all petrol engine run, though most people don't rev high enough for the power to come in.
Diesel's have lots of torque but no power, hence the need for a turbo.
There are always ample warnings and there are always subtle signs,
And you would have seen them coming but we gave you too much time.

well try a 2.0 if you want even more oomph low down and then you can still get the power later on, although maybe a wee bit less free revving with the longer stroke, but I reckon more than makes up for it :-)
