Engine Blocks

Post by Slash01 » Sun Feb 26, 2012 4:41 pm

Appologies if this has been covered else were but I am gathering info for a future project.
I am looking at Rallying a 480 and I want to ideal put a Clio Williams engine in. But in order for me to do so teh standard Volvo engine block must be the same as the Renault one.
So basically I would like to know it the engine blocks for either the Volvo B18 or B20 engines are the same as the blocks from the Renault F7P or F7R.
And when I mean identical it means to the smallest detail or the MSA wont allow the swap.

Are head swaps also allowed for sprints and hillclimbs?

The cheapest way to make sure is to buy a B20F and F7R gaskets and compare them.

For hillclimbs and sprints I believe that you can put any engine into the car you want as well as make any modifications to it and the car. I aint 100% sure through.
but for rallying you can make an engine change as long as the engine block from the original car and the other engine are interchagable, hence the question about the block differences.

well it seems to me that N/A is the way to go as a turbo would be in the up to 2500cc class because of the forced induction coefficient of 1.7, therefore being up against very tough competition. Whereas N/A would put the car in the up to 2000cc class, giving it a fighting chance.

Nice to see a Renault being broken to put in a Volvo and not the other way around :)

I wouldn't be too sure that engine blocks from Volvo are 100% same as Renault.
Not only B18ft is modified by Volvo.
All other engines have different producer part no. for components like: camshaft, valves, gaskets, etc. Some of the parts have 2 part no. , one only for Volvo, one common with Renault.

As i see, the oil pan is identical to all >'93 400 1.7, 1.9, 2.0 engines and also for a wide range of Renault's, including diesel: 6036475
Maybe you will find out more in TECDOC.

The link doesn't work properly. But thanks all the same.
I know that Volvo modified the block for the turbo. But for the N/A's I don't know, all I do know is that the original Volvo 1.7 was a Renault F2 1.8 engine, the changes they made to get a 1.7 I am not sure of. All I'm looking for is the engine block of the Volvo 2.0 to be externally identical to the Renault F7R, the internals don't matter as I will swap the entire engine.

Externally... at a visual check there should be no problem, I guess.
If there is a difference in size, will be something like 1-3 millimeters.

Yes, unfortunately the link doesn't work, but you can enter 6036475 part no. manually, to display results.

Well after some research I have found that the B20F engine is the renault F3R, whether Volvo modified this engine I don't know.
Would a F7P or F7R cylinder head swap be possible. If so I may be able to argue the case for an engine swap as the cheaper alternative.
The Bore and Stroke of the F3R and the F7R are the same as the following shows.

F2N-xxx = 1721 cc 8-valve with carburettor
F3N-xxx = 1721 cc 8-valve with EFI
F3P-xxx = 1794 cc 8-valve with EFI
F3R-??? = 1965 cc 8-valve with EFI (GTA, USA)
F3R-xxx = 1998 cc 8-valve with EFI
F7P-xxx = 1764 cc 16-valve with EFI
F7R-xxx = 1998 cc 16-valve with EFI

Bore x stroke (mm):
1721 cc = 81 x 83.5
1764 cc = 82 x 83.5
1794 cc = 82.7 x 83.5
1965 cc = 82 x 93
1998 cc = 82.7 x 93

Hi, unfortunatly for budget reasons I haven't made any progress towards my dream of a 480 rally car.
However speaking to a friend, because the 480 was never homologated for motorsport, I can put any engine in as well as make any modifications I like as long as it meets with the class regulations.
So I'm going along the lines of the Renault F3R formula engine, or a 1.8 Rover K-series, because I've a lot of experience with the K-series as I volunteer as cheif mechanic on my friends rally team with a Metro GTi. (Were looking for sponsership by the way, so if anyone can help us out http://www.culemotorsport.co.uk)

Slash you sound an interesting guy- where do you live & would you consider performing an engine transplant on my 480 if and when the time comes that its engine is too costly to maintain?

hi there!

the f3r block is 11mm taller than the f4r/f7r and the f2 (1.7)
f3r rods are 149mm, f4/7r are only 144mm

only 16v heads fit the f7r block since the oilchannels wouldnt be covered...

greetz!

Hi

I just wanted to let You know that 480 was homologated at least Turbo was. This are FIA hom. nr.
5417 A Volvo 480 Turbo (1721.1) 1.7 2926 01.08.1990 NL 4
5417 N Volvo 480 Turbo (1721.1) 1.7 2926 01.08.1990 NL 2

By the way
I'm wondering if it is possible to put the 16v head to the B18e.
Correct me if I'm wrong but according to the info below I understand that this is impossible ??? :)

Bore x stroke (mm):
1721 cc = 81 x 83.5
1764 cc = 82 x 83.5
1794 cc = 82.7 x 83.5
1965 cc = 82 x 93
1998 cc = 82.7 x 93

f3r rods are 149mm, f4/7r are only 144mm

only 16v heads fit the f7r block since the oilchannels wouldnt be covered...

Cheers
Ian.

Thanks for the info.

I new of the Homologation for the Turbo a year or so ago. Didn't post about it as this was an old thread.

I have a copy of the Group A papers in .tiff form if anyone's interested. As well as a copy of the 440 Turbo Group A papers

Oh Volvo homologated 330mm brakes. I'd like to see how they got those behind the standard 14" wheels noted in the papers.
I was hoping they'd homologated some suspension and maybe so engine upgrades, but unless you count camber adjustment plates then your in for disappointment.

I should also clear up that fact that for Rallying you can swap engines but for hillclimb and sprint the block must be 'externally identifiable as that fitted as standard equipment'
