Hi

I wonder if anyone have removed their catalytic converter on a standard 1,7i in order to increase performance and power? Since the B18e/ft has the oxygen/lambda sensor on the exhaust manifold it will still be mounted if you remove the cat. I have installed a non catalytic exhaust system on my R5 GTE (has B18e non turbo from factory) and it seems OK, though I haven't fully tested the car yet but when warm it was idling around 1500 rpm. A bit high I think.

I am running a 1990 std 480es with no innards in the cat box and it run's great with no prob's.( I bought it like this.) My son had a prob with his bmw e36 where the cat got blocked so again removed the inside with a slight increase in power.

There were some B18e with cats, my 1989 ES has one, the owner’s manual describes it as B18e(d)104 and had the word “catalyser” on the rear of the car. The B18e(e)104 did not.

I to was looking at removing it at some point as it was not a requirement to have one in 1989 but as of April 1st it will be an MOT failure.

Quote from the AA on the new MOT rules coming in states

Exhaust
A catalytic convertor fitted as original equipment but missing will be a reason for failure

I am still right... the B18E has no cat originally, the b18ED has.... but that doesn't matter.

However will be a mot failure I think.

And there I was thinking I had worked out the engine codes when I first got my car.

I thought B18E was a general term for B18E(E), B18E(S) and B18E(D).

So am I now correct for injection, non turbo?

B18E......104....80kw....No cat....1986-89
B18E(E)...104....80kW...No cat....1988-89....Same as B18E just different name used in handbook.
B18ES.....105....80kw....No cat....1986-88....Exhaust recirculation system.
B18ED.....104...78kw.....Cat.......1988-89....No Lambda.
B18F......106....70kw.....Cat.......1986-90....With Lambda.
B18EP.....115....78kw....No Cat....1990-95
B18FP.....115....75kw.....Cat.......1990-95....With Lambda
