Hello everyone,
I recently got a chip from someone who owned a 480 Turbo a few years back. Said it was installed in his ECU, but he switched it back to standard before selling the car.
The chip seems to be a standard EEprom (window covered with Tape against UV light), but what puzzled me was that on one end 2 of its legs were soldered together and the two opposite legs are bent away to the side. It looks like those 4 legs were not inserted into the socket in the ECU.
First things first: I assume that a chip like this can only be fitted into a purple ECU, correct?
Second: I currently have an orange ECU, could I swap this for a purple one?

Re: Strange chip questions
I have no idea about these things, but you might find some information by searching the forum (better to use google) for ''richmod''...

Found a bit more info here:

According to this site the orange and red ECUs also came as a two-board version? Gotta check mine, that would make things a lot easier

Re: Strange chip questions
that certainly doesnt sound like a richmod! more like a bodge job, would suggest getting a second ecu to try it with so you dont ruin your current one!

Re: Strange chip questions
Found a bit more info. Apparently the chip the programming resides on is of a different type, the soldered legs just create a bridge from ground to ground, nothing spectacular.
The extra legs are actually not needed in this case. the chip is a tad longer than the socket and these legs will not fit anyway.
So no botch job, just a different type of prom. Seems that chips like this have been sold (for quite a lot of money) from some tuning companies.
Need to check my ECU, got an orange one, just have to look inside whether it uses one or two boards. But not while its freeeeeezing outside, -6°C today
