Don't understand wheel numbers

Post by jamescarruthers » Fri Aug 29, 2003 3:22 pm

Right I've been trying to work out if some aloys will fit on my entirely standard 480. I've red a few old posts and was a tad confused by ofsets and the like.

So here's the wheels I'm thinkning of getting... Volvo 17" Comet wheels with Pirelli Pzero 205/45ZR17 tyres. They have an offset of ET43 (and at the end it says PCD 5x108 but I'm not sure if that's to do with the wheels or something unrelated).

So if anyone could kindly advise me as to whether they'll fit on my 480 that'd be great. I don't want rubbing or damage or anything!

O.K first off mate, forget those alloys they wont fit full stop.

Let me break it down for you (Hammer Time)

Lets take your alloys you were thinking off as an example:-

PCD 5x108 : -

This is the defining factor for fitting alloys, every car has it's own individual PCD (although most share a common standard one)
PCD stands for Pitch Circle Diameter.

In this example the alloys have 5 stud holes (5x), so that they make a diameter of a circle to 108mm if you drew a circle through all 5 points
i.e the circle diameter would be 108mm

The Volvo has a PCD of 4x100 i.e 4 stud holes that make a circle of 100mm diameter

As you can see the alloys you were looking at wont fit!, to many studs and the wrong size.

(Another thing to bare in mind and this is important as alot of younger car modders dont pay attention to it is the centre bore size.

This is the size of hole in the middle of the wheel and this needs to match the car or else an adapter (sprigot ring) needs to be used to get the correct centre bore.

The volvo 480 has a centre bore of 52.)

offset of ET43:- This is the amount a wheel leans from the centre point and can be positive or negative. It's a bit like camber.

Easier to see than explain: erm let me borrow a link

To cut a long story short the ET for volvo 480 is in the range 32-38.

Typically you want an ET37 or ET35 in that order.

Pirelli Pzero 205/45ZR17 tyres. :-

Good choice in tyre!!!, thats what i have on mine.

205 is the width of the tyre, 45 is the size of the sidewall (bit visible when looking side on at the wheel) and R17 is the size of the tyre in inches.

If you were going for 17" wheels on a 480 then you would want 205/40/17 as this would keep your speedo correct to a couple of mph! (changing the size of your wheels effects the accuracy of the speedo if not done correctly).

You might get a bit of inside scrubage, but nothing really major.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub32.ezboard.com/bvolvo480.show ... oDodger at: 8/29/03 8:09 pm

Oddly, changing to 17" wheels had no discernable effect on the speedo accuracy in my case, all I can say is "good choice of wheel, Hans!" <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

1995 480 Turbo, Flame Red Metallic, Jacquard/Leather

Right just got your replies now... thanks, especially for the very indepth wheel lesson. Much appriciated. To be honest I did also have in the back of my mind that 17" might be a little too huge looking anyway. Some Cetus wheels would be great though... I think they make the 480 look fabulous.

Thanks again
James Carruthers
