Clutch lol

Post by Daddypimpin » Mon Jun 14, 2010 10:38 pm

So, am I right that I carnt use my early Box, Electronic Speedo & Red ECU, with the later Flywheel/ Clutch?! I was going to use the Flywheel/ Clutch out of a newer 2L as the guy at the Breaker said they are all interchangeable but on here I've read different!?!

Do I definitely need a early Flywheel/ Clutch as I have a Clutch but no Flywheel & don't know where I would get 1!?

There was a bit of mis-information bandied about regarding the flywheel differences - some even by myself being mistaken.
Further investigation turned out that the timing marks on the flywheels are identical, the only difference is in the size of the friction surface and the location of the holes for the dowells and bolts to hold the clutch cover plate.
They are interchangeable - the difference in the ECU's is regarding the flywheel sensor/engine wiring loom, not the flywheel itself.
One type of flywheel sensor only has two wires, the other three. Can't remember which way around it is.
The Orange ECU only works with the Early type.
The Blue ECU Only works with the late type.
The Red ECU's came in the middle and will work with either.

So you want to source yourself a late flywheel and a genuine volvo clutch kit.

Really you need to get yourself an M59 box if you don't already.
The early ones have shorter ratios, so will accelerate quicker, but were made of chocolate.

Thanks mate!!! It's good to come along a few years after everything as been played with & the good bit's of Car's/ Info have been sorted from the bad! I need clear guidelines like yours Chris as I read that much info on something, that by 3am I've forgot where I started lol!

I have the M59 box & Red ECU, so I'm going to get the later model 2L Clutch & Flywheel!

Do you mean the Holes are different if your trying to use a early Clutch with a later Flywheel/ vise versa? What do you do, Just drill them out/ elsewhere!?! Hopefully I wont this problem anyway but just out of interest!

Thats right, the larger clutch obviously has a larger circumference, so the bolt holes are further out toward the edge of the flywheel.
I wouldn't try and drill for a different one myself, you'd need an engineering shop to do it.

I would recommend getting the flywheel friction surface skimmed, save any messing later.

BTW I had the flywheel on my MR2 skimmed by a local CNC specialist place for a tenner cash, the usual automotive places wanted about £30 and reckoned they couldn't fit it in for a fortnight! - an hour driving around the industrial estates paid off.
Then I got talking to the proprieter and asked about heads etc, he reckoned he had the technology to face the block and the head so well you wouldn't need a gasket - that would come at a price of course!

Cheers Chris, I will be getting the Clutch re-skimmed. I saw a Post on here about sending it to a Firm that will put a better Compound on & stiffer Springs for about £80 I think!

So their not actually "interchangeable" as such if you have to get the larger 1 re-drilled to fit! Would you need to just enlarge the holes or actually re-drill them in different place's?!
