need some advice with lowering kit

Post by V480TI » Tue Apr 07, 2009 7:41 pm

Oke, under the rear springs , mounted on the rear axle, each spring has a sort of plastic cap, height about 5 or 6 cm's or so, with a diameter of about 5 or 6 cm.

My Volvo garage told me, that if I want to change springs, I should break them or wack them off, and mount new ones.
Is this true ??

How are these things mounted ??
Is it easy to fit a new one ?? (cause the right side is already broken, but I don't think the rearaxle is not rusted enough to replace)

I already ordered 2 new pieces of that plastic thinghy, so that I can mount my Intrax springs and Koni yellow allround.

Thanks and greetz

A big chunky screw with hex head down the middle does the job. It will draw the plastic pin out. You will probably find the metal bracket that holds the plastic bit on has rusted out.

Post by V480TI » Wed Apr 08, 2009 8:54 am

And if I might find it rusted out, what can I do then ?? this ? :: :kill:

Or what should do the trick ??

Hope that it doesn't mean I need another rearaxle :?

The pin is bashed into the centre of the plastic cap, which expands two lugs out to hold the whole lot onto the rear axle. I wouldn't have thought you were missing the pin, have a good look!!!

pin

Post by V480TI » Wed Apr 08, 2009 7:10 pm

Well, if that plastic cap is loose in the spring, the explanation might be that that plastic pin broke.

But still need the part number for those pins ...

I think I am going to replace shocks and springs saturday when I get those pins before saturday .

thanks and greetz

plastic pin

Post by V480TI » Fri Apr 10, 2009 3:11 pm

Oke, problem sorted.

I have 2 of those plastic caps new from Volvo, and that plastic pin is already inserted.
You put that plastic cap onto the rearaxle, push at the top of the cap , driving the pin in, and IN the rearaxle a part of the cap expands, thus locking it into the rearaxle.

But still, on the volvo part drawing ýou can't see that the pin is a part of the cap.

thanks and greetz.

bummer

Post by V480TI » Sat Apr 11, 2009 3:33 pm

bummer ......
One side of rearaxle/shock assembly is completely gone.(rusted away).
The plastic pin was not broken, it still was in the plastic cap...

However, put the yellow Koni's and Intrax springs on today.
Wonderfull driving, absolutely not a to the ground lowered GTI or so.
Still have place between tyre and arch.
Drives like new.

I think of welding onto the rearaxle so that the spring is retained by the welds (I mean not welding it onto the rearaxle !!!!!).
