the B20F WILL be tuned!!

Post by esta » Mon Dec 08, 2008 1:25 pm

Well I think here I am going to start up a little mission for a NA engine! Having no luck at all with getting an equivalent of a richmod or similar for a B20F, I have embarked on a mission to gain power on a strong little engine, thats worth spending the money on.

I am saving £600 (+VAT  )to get the head fully ported and gas flowed and get the camshaft ground Kent stylee!!

I AM going to have some fun regardless of the model and my insane worrying of devalueing cars! ;)

WATCH THIS SPACE-the B20F WILL be tuned!!!
(could be a long watch, i need the money first! )

No no, it is google time.

How good is your french?
http://www.forum-auto.com/marques/renault/sujet2879.htm
http://formulerenault.superforum.fr/for ... r-t163.htm

You really want this engine:
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... c0b2c010dc

There are some books on porting and gasflowing (Clive Trickely, David Vizard and Des Hamill etc). Most of the time the approach to all engines is the same:
-Deshrouding/ reshaping the combustion chamber
-Streamlining the ports (intake and exhaust) by removing material on the short radius
-Streamlining the valve guide bosses
-reangled valves and valve seats
All with the trusty die grinder.

thanks for this ettore bugatti!!

I am tempted to do this myself as it would be such a learning curve! But the thing is, with buying the correct tools and machinery i may spend just as much, and being a woman would probably mess it right up too!!

but the websites are very useful and i am watching this space!! I searched F3R on google and had all this nonsense on a Toyota! !

I think women are good capable for engine building: little tiny parts need caring attention.
Or are you a different kind of women?
For so far my interpretation of Darwin.

But is a secondhand Formula Renault engine not an option?
I believed the example above was sold for around 500 pounds.

this would be pretty awesome if i could find one! are there any in the UK? £500 is a good price, but not if it needs to be shipped from France!!

my french is pretty bad, would it just be a straight swap then? you are being very kind! ;)

F3R is the Renault version of the B20F isn't it Ettore?

I'd go for an N7Q if you're thinking of swapping the engine Esta, I've been contemplating it myself for a while. Its a fantastic engine, never let me down and it should be pretty easy to squeeze some extra ponies out as it was detuned to 140bhp for the Laguna. Shouldn't be too hard to find one cheap and the osf engine mount bracket is still cast in to the block as its an F series engine essentially.

The F3R is indeed the 2.0l 8V SOHC renault engine which is very similiar to the B20F.
You sure can find a Formula Renault in the UK, I assume.

The N7Q is the same engine as found in the first Volvo X40 series...

The N7Q is basically the 16v version of the F3R (with the air injection system to heat the Cat quicker) as I understand it. The block is virtually identicle to the F-series, not sure about the crank or pistons as I haven't had to remove them yet. Its got Volvo cast in to the head in several places for some reason, I am right in thinking Volvo have never manufactured an engine!?!

As far as I know the F4R and F7R are the only 2.0 16V engines in the F-series.
The engines(renault N7Q or volvo B4204S) in the Laguna RTI, Volvo S/V40 and Safrane are Volvo whiteblocks, the 4 cylinder version of the 5 cylinder block. Which are made by Volvo.

I always thought a good engine to dump into the Volvo 480 was the 2.0 16v from the Fiat Tipo. 150bhp.

better way is the 1.8 16v or 2.0 16v from Renault, for a mechanical easy fit(gearbox, mounts, etc). ;)

I've known people spend over 10k on a n/a hatch to get it to still pretty crap sounding power.

You're in for a long haul.

Fitting a different engine is definately the best route.
