I've heard that it might be a good idea to use for B18FT a gearbox from the 1.7 non-turbo engine. it is shorter and enables better acceleration. has anyone of you heard about that or tried such solution?
regards!

Thats true, it would increase acceleration for the 10 mins it took to break ;)

a gearbox from a Reno 5, gtt or clio 16 v or megan 2ltr can also be used. i'm using a 5 GTT box without any probs.

From what i have been told by most (not all but the majority) renault conversion guys is use the original turbo box. most of the r5gtt users ditch there box for the volvo one as it is stronger.

I have the auto box and with a rich mod have managed to shear 2 driveshafts now from too much torque (now gone to solid driveshafts instead of the hollow ones), think of the effort involved with doing that and the fact the autobox is less rugged than the turbo manual box. i doubt very much that a standard 1.7 / 1.8 box will live for long without the syncros giving in. if you must go for a n\a box go 2.0 as that engine was the most powerful n\a.

but from what i can see the minor diffrence in gear ratios isnt going to make that much diffrence?

The M59 is the box to go for. It's the strengthend version of the M-line. The M60 is the box which is fitted on the B20F. The ratios of the 1st and 2th are shorter because the torque of that engine lies higher up the revs. The higher gears are rated the same on these boxes.
The M59 uses needle bearings on the most stress full places instead of ballbearings which are used in the rest of the range. The housing is also strengthened on some points.
