Richmod? Que?

Post by gingherheed » Sat Oct 18, 2008 7:37 am

I've looked at most of the strings regarding this upgrade but I am still none the wiser.

What is a Richmod?
What will it do to my Turbo?
Will it affect my insurance?
Does it add value to the car?
Does it make any part of the engine wear out any quicker?
Should I get one?
Will it make the car too quick for the Mrs?

Cheers.

1) Standard ecu, re-flashed by a chap called Rich Pruen. It increases boost and tweaks the ignition map to suit.

2) Power goes up to something like 160bhp.

3) yes (if you tell them)

4) probably

5) yes (as with any tuning)

6) yes

7) maybe

yes it is the best hing you could do to a turbo without major surgery , the big difference is when you put he foot down the acceleration is wonderful but sooo smooth. Your wife could cope with it easily if she is comfortable with he existing turbo.

The hardest thing is geting used to the wife going around with a big silly grin on her face all he time .

What have you been upto dear ??? Oh nothing just burning the local chavs/bmws/4x4s at the lights again!

oh did I mention i am selling one

All modifications affect your insurance-even decals(!)-but only if you tell them ;)

Just bear in mind that if you do have a crash and they do investigate (which has happened to a couple of friends of mine) it will invalidate your insurace, you wont get a pay out, and apprently the 3rd party can sue...

Not declaring modifications is like driving around uninsured.

Some companies would ask you to declare a "Turbo" badge on a 2.0 and may even increase your premium for upbadging.

Hopefully for 2009 - 1.7 Turbo.

They would have to inspecting very closely to check what map is on one of the ECU's. There is no visual difference, and unless plummed into a machine that could read the map, there would be no way to tell.

O yeah, with this mod it would be REALLY hard to tell, but my piece above was a general piece and not specifically about the Rich Mod. :)

Thanks everyone.

I think I will hold off for now. The cost of this thing for making my car wear out a bit faster is not what I want at the moment. It already goes fast enough when it needs to.

Thanks to everyone who answered my questions on this string.

Cheers.

It will wear out no quicker than other turbo cars from the factory. Because Volvo didn't want it to be too fast and wanted to keep the longetivity that volvo is known for, the turbo was underpowered from the factory. The Richmod merely realeases that extra power in a safe way. It is all within engine tolerences and will wear out no quicker than say a turbo powered car from another marque. It will wear out a little quicker for a volvo but as mentioned previously, volvo didnt want the car to be too quick so under tuned it. The potential is all there for the extra power and it is just releasing it. It will wear out quicker for a volvo but will be similar to other marques. IMHO it shoudln't be a reason to not get it done. Just make sure the car is runnign fine before the mod though because it has a tendency to make small problems notiuceable lol Your car wont die in 6 months time JUST because you have used a richmod though.
