direct feed cold air intake system !

Post by SMOOTH 480 » Tue Jun 03, 2008 9:38 pm

o.k now bare with me ...
this is an idea ive had for a few months now and it involves an n/a engine and a f.m.ic ( front mounted intercooler )
The idea being that the intercooler sits low infront of the radiator, The inlet side has a short pipe running to an open element filter and the oulet side runs the shortest route to the throttle housing - The theory is , The air filter will grab cool dense air and the intercooler with air rushing over the fins will cool the air further thus making it denser and better for the engine/more power..

opinions welcomed ;)

Won't work, your going to be trying to cool ambient temperature air with....ambient temperature air.

And increasing the length of the inlet tract.

good point you have there uless it gets a halo kit -- but for every day use this would proove more expensive than petrol :(

as chris says...nope.

not only are you increasing the length of intake...youre restricting the intake.
for a tub?...no probs as its forced....for an NA? suicide

(imagine trying to breath through a short fat pipe? easy....now try breathing through 10meters of hose pipe)

best bet for a cold air intake is
spend some time and effort locating the place on the front of your car where the air is going to be scooped at its maximum efficiency..then put a scoop there and pipe it to the standard air box with a free flow element in it.

theres a definite science to it though, cos if you place it wrong, it can have the exact opposite effect, forming a vortex in front of the scoop, which actually sucks the air out, as wind passing the mouth of the scoop is actually stronger than it going in (i think thats how it works lol)

will see if i can find the thread on another forum...but some australian dude did it with a barometer i think....needed to locate the best spot for a scoop for a 'ram scoop' setup for oil cooler.

excellent !
Just a thought goin on the theory of keeping the air cooler for longer
beings as im going to be doing a fair bit of body work to the car maybe a vent in the outer wing feeding cold air directly through a naca scoop into the filter element would be the best and less technically faffing about route to go :D

would as you say have to be placed in the right spot to direct the air into it though as it would act like a house chimmney and suck air away from the filter and do nothing but harm to the engine !!

All above+
N/A requires a streamlined intake traject with few restrictions as possible. Adding elbows, intercooler and longer intake pipes doesn't fit that.

Just fit a larger intake pipe to the bottom of the airbox and put the inlet at a point where there is over pressure(example BMW M3 CSL)
