Autocross / Grasstrack with the Volvo 480

Post by RTS » Mon May 12, 2008 10:28 pm

Hi there everyone,

I am new in this forum and please to see how active it is.
Just let me start to tell I am racing rallycross, autocross (grasstrack for the English guys among you) since 1997, and always with Fiat Uno Turbo's (once I had a turbo engine in my X1/9) and with good results. Now I am planning to look for another car and my eyes turned over to a Volvo 480 with tuned engine.

Now I am looking for some basic info's and I hope you can help me.
1) what is the weight (±) of the car, without seats, windows, electrical stuff etc etc?
2) Cooling, because the 480 has a very narrow front, how does the cooling of the engine hold under stressfull ( read hot) circumstances) ??
3) Can the handling of the car perform better if you use special shocks / springs? And is it available?

I know some of the early cars where fitted with Renault engines but are there any (maybe in some other countries in or out Europe) special tuned Volvo 480 models with highly tuned engines (normal aspirated!) ? I have heard of Renault 21 engines and about the Renault Clio Williams engines.

Before you all say use a turbo engined Volvo, SORRY but the regulations tell me I cannot use a turbo engined car anymore

I hope you can help me, maybe you have some people racing these Volvo 480 for rallying and can inform me.

A volvo 480 highly tuned, hmm unless it's a turbo (i know i read your post) i think you might be wasting your time, although they are quick they do only have an old renualt 8v engine, therefore are not rocket ships, also with the low ground clearance and been front wheeldrive i think you would be disapointed!

Look at something a tad sportier i think!

Okay thanks, are there no special exclusive Volvo 480 been made / sold anywhere in the world with highly tuned engines?

I made one. Depends what you mean by highly tuned though, turbo and supercharger, running 2.5 bar boost, with the aim to go up to 3 bar. Way too much power for a front wheel drive.

Car is no more, engine is in storage.

Hi,

I have one too now

It has a Renault Clio Williams engine (N.A.), highly tuned with 217hp.
There is only one problem and thats the driving axles, they break.
What kind of driving axles are you using / did you use?

Linky

Cooling was fine with the normal rad in the front and the front end like that. spending over 5 minutes per race in second gear at 6,000 rpm would count as stressful i guess.

Yes indeed.
Why? Are these aluminium wheels special?
The seller told me there were several guys who wanted only the wheels and not the car. I was asking why they did not want to buy the car

No, not really
They are just beautiful, I wouldn't use them for the cross. (Search Vega on this forum)

The asking money was well worth the engine and wheels, sadly I dont have the space for these opportunities.

Dirtyrobijntje (Dutch guy) on this forum also did some crossing with a 480ES.

Never got round to solving that. Mine broke also :( I also busted a gearbox, but that was solved.

I did have access to lots of spares but that is about all for the driveshafts.

My engine should be capable of 250 bhp at 2500 rpm, going up to 380 bhp at 5500. Nice wide power band :)
