T4 engine swap...

Post by caleemPL » Sun Mar 23, 2008 12:00 am

Hello for all 480 fans! I am new in this forum and at the begining I have to apologise for my english.
I realy love Volvo 480 for its individuality and untipical chasis line. I would like to buy one in this month, but the truth is that I need more power than it has in original. Both engines are to small for me and I'm affraid that their construction is not ready to get the power aprox. 240-260 HP.
I've got an idea... I'd like to now do anybody tried change that with a engine from Volvo S40/V40 T4. Can anybody give me any information about that. Thanks for all infos... HAPPY EASTER!

it should fit but a lot of fabrication is needed and I mean a lot. The front end needs to be redone to accomodate all the pits. + 480 is so light that just richmoding your turbo will be fast enough. As its a FWD car. Going crazy powerful will mean wheelspin = lost energy.

1994 480 Turbo - RichMod - sold to get the R
1992 850 2,5 20V - sold to get the R
1987 744 TIC - Haas Tuning - totaled by BMW
1973 142 GL B20E - sold

Thanks for fast reply... I already had FWD cars with powerful engines VW Corrado VR6 (tuned on 230 PS) and Audi 80 FWD (2.2 turbo 225 PS) so I've got some practice with that :) I will change suspension (put it 40-50 mm down) and i'd like to use 18" wheels with 235 tires and I'm sure it will be enough... to drive this car only on sunny days :) This 480 should be may baby and my toy, not the car for everyday use! I've got 2 others normal (means: boring) cars :) Do you now anyone who did that swap before?

Not sure about the engine swap, but 18" wheels with that width tyre will result in rubbing. I have 17" with the same size tyres and they rub on full lock without lowering.

Hi everybody!
I've got it at least! On saturday, I bought grey 480 Turbo '1992.
Now I'm starting with engine swap (I've got V40 T4 engine 115.000 km '99) and in the mean time I would like to change the colour of chassis. What do you think about the orange metallic of C70 with black/white interieur or dark red/cherry pearl with light beige interieur.
I haven't got any graphic program to check how should it look like.
Thanks for all your help. I hope that I will finish this swap in at the end of June...
PS. My original engine (turbo, 179.000km, realy good condition) with turbo and all equipment and gearbox, computer and all the stuff is avilable for sale right now. If you're interested look into SELL/BUY forum
Thanks

Love that colour, however if i was undertaking the project you are about to, colour would be the last thing on my mind, good luck with it though.

This topic is worthless with out pictures! :hopping:

In the easy world you only would have to weld some engine and gearbox mounts and change the drive shafts.
But is not the easy world.
Perhaps this will give some inspiration: http://volvo480.dragons.org.uk/forum/vi ... =northstar

BTW Dont forget to uprate your brakes.

Hi All!
We did it! The Volvo V40 T4 1.9liter 200HP engine is in my grey 480! We still have a little problems with electronic equipment and the truth is that my friend still fights with immobiliser, sensors etc, but it runs and we haven't change anything in beautiful 480 chassis! We've just put new oil radiator and few other parts, but the hood wasn't touched! The funniest thing is that engine fits almost like in original... and its weight is less then 1.7Turbo! I hope that at the end of next week I will put some photos into the forum!

Love to see the pictures.

Can you tell us about the drive shafts, gearbox mountings, engine mounting and wiring?

It's done!
It tooks me almost 2.5 years but I did it! Swap is finished, everything works great, car is faster that I ever could imagine. The biggest problem was with original immo from the Vovo V40 which was deliverer of a "heart" :)
The car paint is bi-color: white pearl at the top and S40 T4 orange metallic on down part of chasis
Today I'm changing the suspension to JAMEX -30mm and the last two thing should be done next week: profesional exhaust system and 18" graphite-titanium alloy wheels with Falken tires 215/35/18
I want to show you the photos but I need information how to put them into the forum.
Greatings for all!

It took you half a year to fit the engine, but then more than 2 years after that to finish it?
Would love to see that car with the real alloys and new lights front + back.

Speedy... Blessed who haven't seen but believed ;)
There is a snow in Warsaw right now, and I don't have winter tyres for new alloys, so it takes more time to place them at the car. But as i promised, photos of engine will be placed till sunday...
