Green dipstick, race tuned head?

Post by eEm » Mon Mar 19, 2007 7:43 pm

Greetings 480philes,

Collecting my second 480 tomorrow, met black collection 198, green dipper.

I am assuming that the head from a 1.7 will fit as its the same cylinder block, just bored out. Isn't it???

I only ask because I bought a fully re-worked head from a 480 race car that only managed 3 laps (before spinning out and paralysing its driver).

The inlet valves are so big they virtually touch the exhausts!
Also got my hands on an M45 supercharger.

With a bit of expert knowledge I'm hoping to be able to compensate for the power drain by the air-con!

Any tips? :boom:

Hi,

aeh I´m not that sure that its going to fit ... as far as I know are the combustion chambers different ones at the N/A and Turbo engine. One is called "Heron" and the other is called "Patargé". The turbo head is almost flat and the 2L N/A head has parts of the combustion chamber located in the head, also another thing is if the oil feeds are going to be the same?! the 2L block is ~3cm higher than the turbo version ... so probably thy´ve changed something at the oilfeed lines to the head.

Hope that helps a little bit ....

Regards

Hi eEm, welcome to the forum!

So where did you get hold of the head then? :)

Cheers guys, thanks for the input.

I bought the head from a guy in Exeter who advertised it in the local paper after failing to fit it to his Renault 5GT turbo. He apparently got it from a guy in London who owned a Volvo dealership.
No expense was spared reworking the head but the car crashed and burned first time out and messed up his back!

It looks like its been sitting on a shelf in somebody's garage for a while but the ports look like they've been freshly machined so it clearly hasn't done many miles. The mating face is absolutely flat, with the valves sitting proud by half a millimeter, which doesn't sound like either of the heads you've described.

I'll post some pics and measurements at the weekend and, hopefully someone could post a comparative image of the 2.0l cylinder block mating face? I would be most appreciative as I want to exhaust all avenues before un-necessarily prizing the lid off my new engine!

Well! I'm baffled!

The oil feeds match up with the B20f exactly, but the seats on both the inlet and exhaust valves are 60º as with the B18e.

The inlet valves are 41mm ø and the exhausts appear to be standard.

So what kind of head have I got?

Its certainly not standard whatever it is.

Cheers
