I'm seriousley considering a de-cat but I like the fact that I can do 100mph and still be able to listen to the stereo (not that I would do that sort of speed!) how much louder is it? I would'nt mind a bit of extra growl but when I put a de-cat on my old 106 rallye it was soooooooo loud. any advice appreciated

doesnt really make a difference to the noise, you can hear the turbo a bit more though, which is cool :)

how much more power

I like the sound of that! :D so what can I expect power wise 10bhp and slightly quicker spool up?

Not sure on BHP,it just feels like someones freed yer engine up,it breathes out much more quickly,as is not restricted.

A de-cat pipe is best.If you were going to just knock the insides through on a 480 cat,it works well, but apparently theres turbulance in the cat box.It was designed to have insides,so a puropse built one is best for flow efficiency.

Yep my Turbo sounds nice through it too!You will need to put your cat back on for MOTs though dont forget!

Only if your scared of electrical problems and rust and bought a late model turbo :D
If you own a pre K reg turbo then go kick your cats insides out, right now :)

Not much difference in volume, make's it sound more renault like to me for some reason. Reminds me of how a friends 1.7gtx R5 sounded. I like it anyway and yes, you hear the turb spooling better.

yeah mines a '91 so it gets tested as a non cat. a local company are going to make me one up for 35 squids then i'm going to smash my cat with a sledgehammer!

De-cat'ed my 744. The result was a bit higher exhaust note but way faster turbo spoolup. A fix for a louder note for me was a sports straight trough 3" resonator instead of Cat. Gives nice smooth constant exhaust note and almost doesn't affect performans.

Why dont you try a sports cat - the airflow is much better and it will pass MOT with no probs!! :D

can you de-cat a 2litre?
saves having to replace it when it goes booboo.

what sort of changes with respect to the emissions would it make, i.e. as said above about mot's etc.

cheers

ian

ps. yes i know about the age of the thread, i just thought it pointless creating a new one :)

The answer is 12

ian on a serious note....yes you can de-cat a 2 ltr
same rules apply though.....if before 91/92, then youre ok, if after mot issues.

be aware though that with a turbo, the quicker you get the gas out the better....with an NA car, you do need some back pressure, and this will remove that, so performance wise could actually be worse.....ive had two b18ep's (ok, not 2 ltr, but same applies i think)....one made a massive difference in breathing, and felt smoother and flowed better....the other ran like murfs kicked cat.....well, but hobbled and jerky

cheers for the reply rob

the car is a 93 2litre so thats what i was thinking about with the mot and all...
just seems a bit mad to have to by a cat for the sake of it when they decide to go kapputt, how much do they cost? £150 or more

im not thinking about it immediately im just thinking of it for the near future :)

cheers

Yeh on a N/A you'll notice the idle going a bit lumpy and the car won't drive as smoothly anymore. I've just done it to mine and I'm currently not happy with how the car has responded.

The power increase is minimal with de-cat, mine now feels less responsive at low revs, although better in higher rev ranges. IMHO I'd say that 2ltrs shouldn't be modified power-wise, nothing is really cost effective, by all means change the air filter, or change your cat for a sports version but thats about all i think you can do and even they have minimal results.

In fact, probably the most cost effective thing to do with a 2ltr to make it speedier would be to paint some giant go-faster stripes on it! ;)

the best results for 'decatting' on an NA i found were....

remove cat from car and with an airline, blow all the shite out of the cat....all the deposits etc....but tape a bag to the other end...the gubbings allegedly have a half life of a millenium or so.
then if you can get a large drill bit, drill a hole through the ceramic honeycomb inside....i did a 22mm hole in mine.....i found it enough to allow breathing, but not so much to lose the back pressure etc.

alternatively ive heard of people smashing the crap out altogether, then putting a piece of pipe striaght through and welding.....it looks like a cat from the outside, but is a striaght pipe inside....not sure how that would affect the lambda though, as it wouldnt be reading any kind of exhaust fumes etc.

it does seem to be a suck it and see thing.....get a scrappy cat and play with that....if its shite, you can put the original one back on, no harm, no foul.

Well even if it looks like a CAT, but isn't, it'll fail the MOT on emmissions test anyway...?
