Thinking Ahead

Post by Jimmy » Wed Apr 02, 2008 12:35 pm

Got some good news at the weekend. My dad retires soon and so I was offered Mum's little fiesta as a runaround. I said I would love it if I had a drive so that I could stop using the 480 as a daily driver. Mum then said, well you can keep it on our drive for as long as you want. Great!

So, in a few months the 480 will retire from active service (which is good as a I feel a tad guilty buying it to do 20k miles a year). I can then slowly get it to be my perfect car.

Thinking ahead a year or two (when I have enough funds) I would like to swap the 2 litre lump for something a bit more powerful.

Not looking to go OTT, just get towards the 150bhp mark. I have no real technical ability and so would have to pay someone to do it for me and so would ideally like to find the 'easiest' engine swap to do.

Is there such as thing as an easy swap? And if so, what sort of engine could I go for? Could I also go from the Autobox I currently have to a manual?

Before that will be slightly better brakes (auggestions welcome - this will likely happen at the next MOT as the discs are getting a bit pitted at the moment) possibly followed by slightly lower suspension (again, suggestions welcome).

A respray is also on the cards in the future too, money permitting. At the moment a nice metallic grey is favourite.

I am trying to get an idea of a programme of improvements(together with costs) to match to the pocket money my wife lets me have each month :D

Any ideas or comments on other bits I might need to consider would be most welcome. Being an engineer, I want it all planned out well in advance with a nice wallchart showing what should be happening and when :-)

If money is no object...Brembo manufacture brakes for the 480!

And lowering springs shouldnt be too much of a problem to find...I am saving for a set from one of the websites someone mentioned in this section of the forum...take a scan round some of the posts for more info...think it was less than £100 all round...

There are a number of mechanical devices which increase sexual arousal, particularly in women. Chief among these is the Volvo 480 ;)

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the euro performance site - it is great. They have some nice brake parts on there - I costed an ideal set up to £255 for new discs and pads all round.

Not cheap, but if I can have a go a doing some or all of the work myself it won't be too bad.

you could i reckon with a custom exhaugst manifold , bigger valves , gas flow and porting , up the fuel pressure , larger injectors get close to 150 bhp on your 2 litre engine. though depending on where you go this could cost from £500 to £1300 etc.

just an idea cheers felyx.
140mph for £175 just test the brakes

Agreed, had them on the T5 and they were fine along with the "trusty dusty" volvo pads.
