Turbo Exhausts ?!
Hi,
I´m a little bit courious what kind of "tuning" exhausts are used from the members arround here ?
Today I went a "little" bit shopping and the result is that at the end of next week I´m going to get a complete handmade/welded stainless 2.5" exhaust for my 480 with 2 pipes out at the end.
Ok it´s about to cost ~900 quid but I´m very courious how it´s going to sound and much more how it´s working in fact of the engine and power
Another good thing today was that I found a shop which is capable of fine tuning the EZK and Jetronic ECU to fit perfectly to my 2L turbo engine.
So I hope that at the end of this year I have a nice running 480 with lots of power from the 2L turbo engine ... hope that it´s going to be a little bit more than the 200HP and 350Nm I have at the mo.
It would be interesting to know what the experiences are with aftermarket tuning exhausts ?!
Cheers!
Tobi

Thats excactly the problem on a 480. You don't have much room left under the car. The exhaust has to bend over the rear axle, while otherwise the car looses its rear suspension
Anyway, getting rid of the cat gives the best effort in power, rear damper gives some more, the bends in between aren't that big of a problem as it is with power gain.
Well, welded myself a dubble exhaust so no problem there on getting rid of the exhaust gasses. And lookes good too.

Unless your going over 350 bhp dont bother with 3" exhaust.
2.5" is good til around 250-260 then 2.75" is good until 350
Theres not enough space on the 480 to have a "good" 3" system IMO.
I had the Peco system on my 480 and loved it

An exhaust out of the middle of the bumper is indeed, as good as, impossible. There the box for the spare tire that is completely in the way there. It's a real challenge working on the exhaust, I can assure you
There is room for a dual exit though. I'm currently busy creating a stainless steal dual damper. Working for a company wich works with steal so that won't be much of a problem.
Anyway, good luck finding yourself a turbo. It's definitely worth searching for.

There is no extra space between car and ground. I just made the exhaust like the original is made but with bigger pipe.pLoTz wrote:looks nice, but not very straight .. if you got enough air left between your car and the ground, try to avoid bends (is that the right word ?), if possible.
I agree with this. I will never ever need this big exhaust but when i made it i just thought that i'll make as big as possible with reasonable effort. And that was pretty easy. Full 3" exhaust would be almost impossible atleast cars with lowering springs...Unless your going over 350 bhp dont bother with 3" exhaust.

Budget tuning for the ES:
Get a pipe from a 4xxTD or a 4xxTurbo, they're both 2.25". Neither has a muffler in it.
You could even replace the cat on models up to '89 with a straight pipe.
Prices with the standard muffler: 230 Euro, 155£
Prices without the muffler: 100 Euro, 70£
(price includes clamps and rubbers)
It's just an idea, any comments?

What size exhaust?
Be careful with downpipes the bigger the pipe the turbo will be more laggy coming on boost but will give better HP at higher RPM.
It's finding a good balance. 2.75 is good for me

Hi,
I haven´t done a bigger pipe for the downpipe, I just have removed some restrictions which I had at the adapter plate I made the pipe is 2.5" like it was before, but the exhaust turbine wheel was ~1/3 behind the adapter plate so that the exhaust gases weren´t able to pass through without hitting the metal plate before getting into the tube.
The exhaust itself is planned to be 2.5" overall from front to back,
Think/hope this will work out well with my engine and charger
Cheers

everything is stainless und has a diameter of 2.5" and the cat iss a 200 cell version which should give a nice flow,
Now they "only" need to be welded and fitted in place ... hope it´s going to get a nice new exhasut for my 480
