Just a quick question before the last night with old pump.
What to check, how to get pump- from underneath of car or from engine bay?
Don't you know how to have silent PAS?
Read it and have fun!
First make sure you've got everything neccessary to change work.
Set of right tools:
sizes
2x 17 eyed
2x 15 eyed
10 eyed or U-shaped
13 eyed or U-shaped
22 U-shaped
Flat screwdriver
A liter container for old fluid
and one special tool for brake hose, but can be easily substitiuted with
number 17 U-shaped.
A jack up to 2 tones - must have wheels!
Get a spare PAS pump.
1 or 2 ltrs of ATF II
The one from turbo
The one from ES
Turbo and ES got the same one but:
brackets are different and turbo drive wheel is nearer engine than in ES but can be easliy swaped.
Don't know how to swap wheels for know.
I got turbo one and mission is unsuccesful.
Box for all screws and nuts.
Now prepare place for working. It's got to be a flat hard surface as you've got to jack up the front of car .
Got everything? Go to the nearest shop and have 2 pints of beer(can be Pepsi if you want to test your car later)
Having everything completed we can start.
First open hood:
Then put a jack in front of car under subframe. I suggest one jack and one point of lifting- middle of front subframe pipe.
I tried also 2 Volvo jack on both side but may not work well.
Put handbrake on and put some wooden bricks after and before rear wheels.
So jack up your car:
Now you've got to bleed all the ATF from PAS system. To do that remove return pipe from ATF container:
In my early ES there container is in front the car in later 480 it's near collant container.
Remove clips using a flat scrrewdriver but carefully, don't damage pipe or container.
Now holding pipe to top put earlier prepared container to fluid container to bleed it.
Now put return pipe in this container for old fluid.
Go to the car but try not to sit in it and start the engine. Turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock few times.
Got 0,7 ltr fluid in container?
Good, we can move forward to next step.
Unconnect battery for safty reasons.
Now take alternator out of the car. Unconnect every single cable going to it. Try to remember where which was connected.
Then unscrew big screw holding it (2 eyed 17s)
Remove tensioner nut and alternator is out(be carefull it's quite heavy).
Remove also multibelt.
Now you can have first pint of beer and last look on old pump in car.
Have a short rest and geather some strenghts for pump.
Remove hose going from container to pump to have better access to screws. And remove container.
Unscrew every big screw mounting pump. All 15s with nut. Should be excaclly 4 of them.
If you did that pump is almost out.
The only thing is hose going to steering rack.
To remove it you'll need a u-shaped 17 and u-shaped 22.
Do that this way:
Take the pump out of the car.
After that you're almost on half way.
Open second beer and you can start to clean all screws.
I think it's important as it'll be easier to put everything together with clean and greased screws. To clean I used old motor oil. It's greasing and cleaning at once.
To install new pump do everything in reversal order.
When everything is back on its place, multibelt is tensioned, battery connected it's high time to fill PAS system.
If you've got 2 ltrs of ATF you can easlily use one ltr for flushing the system.
To do that fill it up remove return pipe and start the engine.
Then plug pipe again and fill the system up again. Leaving container open start engine, turn wheels from lock-to-lock few times and your done!
Some advices:
-After bleeding the system and before removing alternator I lowered the car again. Becasue it's much easier to work with car when it's standing.
-I collected all the screws into one box just not to lose them somewhere.
-If you have an ES and turbo pump letme know how to swap drive wheels
-You don't need to jack up the front but it's easier to turn wheels.
Have a good time reading and changing
Good luck!
Edit: I've just been told tha the pump was from aircon car, so probably no differences beetewn Turbo and ES pumps until they don't have aircon.

The pipes are, however, clipped to the subframe
