How to make Door Trim Clips

In case you performed a procedure on your 480 which you would like to share with other 480 drivers: please post a 'manual' here. The threads on this forum aren't open for debate, if you read a manual and it can do with an improvement: please persuade the writer by PM to alter a certain part. If you feel the manual is incomplete then make a brief addition in a reply to the thread. Just don't start debates in this forum.

How to make Door Trim Clips

Post by jifflemon » Sun Mar 01, 2020 3:51 pm

The door trim clips, like most 480 parts, are long gone unobtainium. However, you can easily stop the flapping trim by doing the following.

Start with a standard Ebay clip - because links wont last forever, try a search for "interior door card lining trim clip" and check that dimensionally, it looks like this:

Our door clips look like this:

So, take our new clip, and start by chopping the end off it with some wire cutters; You may need to experiment, but I found 3 or 4 "branches" to be an ideal depth.

Now our base is circular, we need rectangular.... out come the snips again

You're not aiming for perfection here, just removal of a good chunk, as you use a file to shape the rest, before testing fit.

There you go! No excuses for floppy trim now, once you start they take about a minute to chop and shape! Get going!

Nice work!

I think I still have my trim clips, but they still flap around as I do not know how to mount them properly

The bottom clips are hook like, and slot into the plastic door card.
The top mounts use the branches to grip the plastic door card.

It could be one of two things:
1) The hardboard part of the door card is split and worn, allowing the fastener to pull out/away
2) the plastic part of the inner door card is worn

having looked at it it seems fine itself, however, I can't work out how to rotate the clip to lock in the hole after it's been put back on :wall:

the "hole" in the hardboard should be rectangular - the clip should only really go in one way, then rotate 90 degrees

yeah, it's how to rotate it when the card is on.

...unless I take it out of the card, put it in the door and rotate it, and then put the card on the other way...

You fit the clips to the Fabric/leather door card before fitting them into the plastic Door trim

So, there's a new update, which I'm kicking myself for not thinking of earlier...

After you've removed your door trim card (probably to repair the missing/damaged vapour barriers)

Image

Mark the trim hole positions with a sharpie

Image

Then remove the main door trim card and carefully 5mm drill holes.

Image

Apply a little rust proofing around the hole, then re-assemble. The beauty of this is that you now don't have to cut your trim clips down, and because they go through both the plastic door card, then into the door frame, everything is tightly sandwiched, meaning less floppy trim!
