Start off by removing the rear light cover,

followed by the quarter panel. 2 screws in the Pocket, 1 at the front.

Pop out the rear panel plug, and untuck the hatch seal...

pull the boot carpet out, and you should be able to remove the rear quarter panel. Undo the 2 10mm bolts near the lamp ECU.

Using a 17mm ring spanner, undo the locking collar of the aerial

Free the motor from the bracket (it's sat in two rubber grommets, unlcip the aerial lead and power, then push it down, then extract from the gap above and right.

In the finest HBOL tradition, refitting is the reversal!

However, it'd be criminal NOT to spray some form of cavity wax into your rear arches whilst you've got nice access!

Thank you so much Jifflemon, I have bee looking for such a guide for a long time, just hope my 460 aerial will fit!

If I haven't got any cavity wax, would WD40 be acceptable (got plenty of that!)

Trust me when I say wd40 won’t work long term!

Old engine oil? Quite suitable! (But smelly and messy when it drips out). A single tin of my favourite (bilt hamber s50) would be the best £20 (Amazon price) spent on a 480, and would easily do both rear arches, and probably your doors and sills too!

...and I would never have to worry about it again? that does sound good. My arches are near perfect, and I was planning a rigorous WD40 regime for the fast encroaching winter months, but they are so covered in muck, I don't know whether applying rust protector would be effective, and I don't have a jetwash to get rid of it.

also, what about the 460 aerial?

Not sure that the 460 one was exactly the same - according to the 1992 accessories brochure there were electric aerials available for the 440, 460 & 480, but they all have different part numbers (and, indeed, were at different prices!).

That said, I doubt you'd need to do much to make it fit. The difference is probably in the length of the body of the aerial (and perhaps corresponding number of sections - the 480 has 5 but that won't matter) - a little adaption to the mounting bracket is probably all that's necessary. I am sure the wiring will be identical.

Good luck! :D
