Rear Bumper Removal

In case you performed a procedure on your 480 which you would like to share with other 480 drivers: please post a 'manual' here. The threads on this forum aren't open for debate, if you read a manual and it can do with an improvement: please persuade the writer by PM to alter a certain part. If you feel the manual is incomplete then make a brief addition in a reply to the thread. Just don't start debates in this forum.

Rear Bumper Removal

Post by jifflemon » Mon Apr 17, 2017 9:04 pm

Step 1: Get some of this, or your favourite equivalent. WD40 for removal, copper grease for re-assembly

Step 2: Know where all the fastening points for the bumper are and spray them liberally with your penetrating fluid. Do this well in advance of attempting removal (think daily, for a week), as they are very likely to shear. You could try heat, but the problem is that the bumper bar is wrapped in foam which is likely to be susceptible to heat and quite possibly, inflammable.

The fixing points are:

The bumper bar - 4 13mm nuts, either side of the chassis leg, and one 13 mm bolt through the towing eye and into the chassis leg.

then on either side, 2 screws through the rear arch liner

and 1 screw underneath

Step 3: Disconnect the foglamp and numberplate wiring from the boot (remove the spare wheel cover and wheel to find them) and pop out their oval grommets - The wiring will go out of the car along with the bumper.

Step 4: Hopefully your fixings are all undone (if not, head back to step 2 and keep spraying). The bumper end caps just need pulling out slightly to clear the wing and the bumper pulls off backwards.

Step 5: To remove the skin from the bumper, remove the 4 screws per side from the lower retaining strips

as well as the two outer screws, making sure not to lose the vital stepped washer

and then repeat the process on the screws on the rear of the bumper bar.

Reassembly is the opposite of removal, but please cover EVERYTHING in copper grease - Yes, even those screws that go into plastic.

The main bumper foam support isn't the issue; however, there's two pieces of foam either side that are below the drain holes.
These are the big problem - They hold water and drain it into the bumper bar.

That's brilliant, thank you so much. I'm printing it off for my 'How to' manual so Al can have it next to him while he's working. Wish I'd done that with all of Glagow Jim's guides...

I'm trying to get the screws out from my rear arch liner (the mudflaps are affixed here also), but they are not budging. WD etc. applied a few times but not helping!

Do you know what the fixing screws fix into?

As marked on your original photo.

Is there a spire clip or similar arrangement fitted to the wheel arch liner?

Just dont want to break anything, but might have to drill out. Thanks.

Will check once home, but given its a plastic liner, it'll most likely be either a spire clip or self tapping screw.

Drill out!

spire nuts / wee metal clips that are folded over the plastic (I think as my self tappers were removed with angle grinder, drill won't look at them)

I had to drill mine out. It did take some time as I didn’t own an angle grinder at the time.

Drilling an grinding produces a lot of heat and can melt plastic ! Best is to spray with water .
