How to remove central trunking and carpet

In case you performed a procedure on your 480 which you would like to share with other 480 drivers: please post a 'manual' here. The threads on this forum aren't open for debate, if you read a manual and it can do with an improvement: please persuade the writer by PM to alter a certain part. If you feel the manual is incomplete then make a brief addition in a reply to the thread. Just don't start debates in this forum.

How to remove central trunking and carpet

Post by glasgowjim » Wed Mar 12, 2014 9:38 pm

how to ....... work in progress

REMOVAL OF CENTRE CONSOLE COMPLETED..

Due to the awkwardness of using photobucket these days it has taken me ages to get this far only a couple of more photos to be uploaded the photos re ordered and text to be added then its finished

To rtemove the centre console you have first to remove the cubby armrest between the seats .
To do this you move the front seats fully forward and remove the 2 screws , one on each side near the base at the rear of the side of the unit now open the top cover and remove the cubby insert by pushing the side parts in and removing it back first.

PHOto to be inserted here.

Now release the hand brake fully then reach in and depress the spring clip holding the mirror and window switch unit in position and remove the unit carefully pulling off the 4 large connector plugs.
pull up the hand brake and remove the little square cover and unscrew the the screw the unit can then be manoeuvered out and removed.
Incidently the gives full access to the SRS control unit. :)

Now you are ready to remove the centre console unit.

Note there is a definite sequence to removing the cubby inserts and heated seats switch unit.

squeeze the lower rim part of the leather gaiter as shown bleow and then lift up...

now undo the 2 screws indicated...

now open and pull out the ashtray as shown

the seat switch unit is clipped in at each end and can be removed easily .

note despite the poor quality plastics unless you are very heavy handed you wont break anything ;)

now dont forget to remove the top screw tucked away here....

Image

nearly done

just undo the 2 screws at the base and retain as they are specific to that part.

Image

although a tight fit the centre console can be levered out .

job done :hopping:

Finishing off and adding some comments on the above (I'm NOT saying Jim is wrong, just my thoughts) as I found this a hugely useful thread!

Depending on your reason for removal, I'd always start with the seats first. It just gives you a lot more room to work with.
I found it easier to remove the cubby boxes by prying the clips from the front with a small screwdriver. Go in diagonally from the front, then straighten your screwdriver. Its a bit like removing a car radio.
The centre console/armrest; I found I have to remove the rubber from the handbrake in order to remove the mirror/window switches assembly. It just pulls off, but a squirt of wd-40 down either side using the straw certainly helps! it's held in by screws on either side at the back (slide the seats forward) and one hidden under a flap at the front.

1) remove the seats - You'll need a Torx 50 driver for this. The rear bolts are easy to get to, the fronts less so. They're also VERY tight, so would recommend a Torx 50 bit on 3/8" or 1/2" adaptor with the relevant breaker bar. Remove the rear bolts first, then slide the seats back to gain access to the fronts. Remember to unclip the wiring harness from the heated seats.
2) Remove the seat belt side rails. The fronts are held in by a single bolt, the back is hooked in; Move the rail so it's horizontal with door and twist and wiggle... it will come out.

3) Remove the sill trims - Nothing more complicated that press in fasteners.

4) prise the knob of the boot/petrol release lever, remove the two side screws and remove the plastic cover.

5) Carpet removal should now be fairly straightforward. I'd recommend a sharp stanley knife, so you can slice it the middle where it wraps around the front centre console - You'll not see the cuts as they're covered, it just makes it a lot easier to manhandle out! You'll be able to pull the carpet out from behind the front quarter panel trims and centre rear console without having to dissemble them.

Hi Balto
I don't know how to do it on the forum - if I post it as an image I have to shrink it down and lose clarity on the pics. If you pm me your email address I can send it full size as an attachment.
