How to...replace an ignition ECU

In case you performed a procedure on your 480 which you would like to share with other 480 drivers: please post a 'manual' here. The threads on this forum aren't open for debate, if you read a manual and it can do with an improvement: please persuade the writer by PM to alter a certain part. If you feel the manual is incomplete then make a brief addition in a reply to the thread. Just don't start debates in this forum.

How to...replace an ignition ECU

Post by jamesy12345 » Sun Dec 09, 2012 5:38 am

Simple one yes I know but you would not believe how long it took me to work out where this item was

I'm talking about the plastic item that lives under the centre console, not the metallic fuel ECU that lives on the right hand side of the drivers footwell (remember I referring to a RH drive car)...

So, easy enough, just remove the section of carpet on the left hand side of the drivers footwell.

Then gently pull out the ECU with polystyrene holder. Before you pull too far remove the vacuum hose and the multi-plug that is held in place by a screw...

By the way , be careful with the heater outlet surround when removing the carpet you can snap the clips easily on this unless you reach inside through the centre console and push out the securing clips from behind. I am talking about the square piece of plastic visible in the top right of the photo above.

Below is the centre console with the cubby hold things removed, looking down on the location of the ECU. You can see the disconnected vacuum line.

Refitting is easy enough just make sure the multi-plug and vacuum line are secure, the ECU is sat securely in the polystyrene and also when you slide the unit back into the centre console try not to catch any cabling - lift it out of the way.

Hope that helps someone!

And as a precaution, disconnect the battery first. It's been reported that if certain contacts are made before others, some components can get fried.

Most of the time you get away with it.
