Make wiper's arm not interfering the hood

In case you performed a procedure on your 480 which you would like to share with other 480 drivers: please post a 'manual' here. The threads on this forum aren't open for debate, if you read a manual and it can do with an improvement: please persuade the writer by PM to alter a certain part. If you feel the manual is incomplete then make a brief addition in a reply to the thread. Just don't start debates in this forum.

Make wiper's arm not interfering the hood

Post by bbf » Thu Sep 06, 2007 9:54 pm

Hi folks!
This is my first HowTo..

As you noticed, a lot of our cars have this disease - the wiper arm is rubbing into the motor cover. there's a pretty simple solution, a matter of 5 minute job, to fix this irritating bug.

First, remove the hood. No, not realy, just joking! I removed mine for other purpose, so it isn't on all pictures.

Ok, now remove the screw on the left corner of the plastic panel covering the bottom portion of window:

see the hole where the screw was, at the dead leaves.

Now if you lift the plastic cover a little bit like so:

you'll see another screw. this one holds the wiper mechanism in place. (on my picture is allready undone).

unwind it some turns till you get about 0,5 to 1 cm of play. Whole left side of wiper mech should frealy move up and down.

This play on the other side is shown on this picture:

Note: i used a mirror to see what's going on and to take a photo.
this play is between wiper mech and body.

By inserting a thick metal piece of washer, you'll make it stay away from the bonnet, thous lowering the complete wiper arm. I used an aluminium lamella about 4mm thick, with 'U' shapped bore (drilled and later cut from aside). This kind of 'washer' is easier to insert and you don't have to completely undo the screw.
this latter looks like:

After you screw down the screw (ah, screw my bad English) , youll make this

look like this:

after reataching the hood, (heh), you'll notice the difference!!

just be sure to have a proper supervisor in the procedure.

hope this calms down some restless soules..

Cheers!

Ow it's not only me, I thought my 480 maybe had an accident, because the front isn't that symetric, but now I see more volvo's have the wiper-going-against-the-bonnet thing.
