Adding Passenger Seat Height Adjustment.

In case you performed a procedure on your 480 which you would like to share with other 480 drivers: please post a 'manual' here. The threads on this forum aren't open for debate, if you read a manual and it can do with an improvement: please persuade the writer by PM to alter a certain part. If you feel the manual is incomplete then make a brief addition in a reply to the thread. Just don't start debates in this forum.

Adding Passenger Seat Height Adjustment.

Post by Roo » Mon Aug 06, 2007 7:32 pm

Some of you have noticed that the Charger now has passenger seat height adjustment. I initally thought it wasn't possible but after some poking around I thought i'd give it a go. This would also work for LHD cars wanting to do the same conversion on the passenger seat.
So:
The finished article.
Image
First, find a suitable drivers seat with height adjustment. (for these photo's i've used the Chargers drivers seat. Any 400 series drivers seat will do as the runners are all identical. (height adjusting ones of course. ;) )
So: The removed seat:
Image
Now unclip the slider handle retainers and remove the handle. (in blue)
Image
Next undo the two bolts towards the front of the seat.
Image
And note the position of each component:
Image
next remove recliner knob by removing the cover and undoing the 10mm nut. repeat for the cross-headed cap (in red)
Also remove the height adjusting handle. (In blue)
Image
Now remove the seat belt and pre-tensioner support. (you will need to use the passenger seat components obviously)
Image
Now remove the bolts towards the back of the seat. WARNING! These bolts retain the height adjusting springs and as such can cause injury! ;)
When releasing them, please take care.
Image
The seat base should now be free from the seat itself and both your hands should still be intact...
Now, the reversal process:
Remove both star retaining washers. These hold the bar for height adjusting in position. Once removed, rotate 180 degrees. (so the handle will come out of the opposite side of the seat.
Image
Now trim the side panel. (this is marked by volvo, just follow the lines!)
Image
Now put it all back together. :D
When i put the spring back on i used the following method:

That should be it. I hope you find it useful! :D

Nice one :D

Just when you're starting to think, 'what other little mod's can i make to the car without making it too modified', one just lands in your lap.

Nice one Roo, good how to!

Cheers. :D These type of mods are my favourites, ones that could/should well have been on the car from new and look factory fit. :D

Really? My favourite mods are the ones that enable the car to be used as a boat at the touch of a button, eject a hapless passenger, or fire missiles from the grille.

Failing that, the seat mod looks good though!

Hi
I am new to volvo 480 - it is actually my first car.
It may be silly but didn't figured out how to move out front seats.
After lifting the handle underneath the seat i can move seat to the front or back but movement is limited so cant move it far enough to take it out. Is there any security lock?
