480 reborn

Post by kiden » Mon Jul 18, 2022 9:26 pm

Hi!
I am a new 480 ES owner. The car in question is a 1987 ES, engine B18E that has been sleeping 20 years in a garage in Spain. Now the car has been overhauled and moved to Sweden were I live. There are still some issues though:
.Speedmeter (odometer?) not working,
.Driver headlight not popping up,
-rain leaks in in the back when raining.
-There is no radio!!!!
Last week I replaced the injectors (Bosch) and made the car driveable again.

I really like the car model and hope to get it fixed soon!

Great to hear of a really early car being saved ! If you are new to the forum you will have to do 10 posts before you can add pictures. More of the story of the car's rescue would be great.

Which? Speedometer indicates speed, odometer is mileage. Either way, have a read through of this

Start by doing the "brinkie winkie dance".

Fairly self explanatory, but it will then run both motors constantly up and down. Its a bit of exercise for them!

Factory fitted option that is! I like to remove all the interior, give it a vacuum, then a light dusting of talcum powder. Makes tracking leaks a LOT easier! Obvious entry point would be the wiring loom between hatch and body, tailgate seal or light seals.

Soooooooo many options here! All down to personal taste!

Looking forward to some updates!

Have a look at the Philips range from the 1980s, they are pretty decent and still have parts support. If no one has messed with the plug connector, should just be a straight installation, otherwise there are plenty of options :D

I am a huge fan of the early cars, my 1988 car was restored twice!
Current Jobs to do (23/1/22):
Fix Central Locking
Fix drivers side speaker
Annoying Scratching Squeak
Water leaks
Complete Front O/S rebuild

Hi all!

Thanks a lot for your replies! Im very sorry I didnt answer quickly, theres been vacation and then I had this issue with the fuel pump assembly. It leaked petrol!, issue was that on the top of the fuel pump there is a connector in metal that fits into the plastic housing. Unfortunately a crack med it leaked. So before I can get my hands on a spare it has been seale with 2 component glue...not the most elegant solution but I find worrysome the smell of petrol on my parking...
I would post a pic but it seems I have to some some serious posting before that.

And last May I asked her to give it to me and fix it. We arranged towing to a workshop and had it overahauled. It would be a dream to have the time and room to do thatby myself by its just not realistic. I think they put many hours to get the car running again. This was done:
-New tyres,
-New braking pads,

-New bulbs of course,
-filters, liquids (oils, brake, cooling etc)

The workshop spent a lot of time trying to get the inyectors (Bosch) fixed as we couldnt find new, send those for ultrasound cleaning.
-New battery of course,

Actually the injectors have now been replaced. Some weeks ago, when the car arrived from Spain I found a brand new set at Bavarianwerke , Germany, so I ordered those. A set of four cost me 260EUR. Im quite proud to say I did the changover myself, removed the old ones and installed the new ones. It was a bit tricky to get out the injector "ramp" or "fuel bar", then the connectors and finally the small clips, but it worked. Now the cor goes much more smooth and nice. I have some picures of that as well I can post when I am allowed.

Also, changed many small details. For example the gas dampers for the rear hatch had to be exchanged.
Also the electric window mechanisma was seized, had to be fixed, fortunately they could change the wiring.

umm tryed to copy paste some pics in here but I couldnt, maybe I need to check rules or how to do it.
Until that, thanks for the replies!
And yes , neither the speedmeter and the odometer works. I think the odometer just integrates the speeding so when speedmeter is not working I dont get mileage neither.

I couldnt understand the "brinkie winkie dance" more that you use the hood locking to motion the headlight motors but Ill check it later!

Pictures need to be hosted somewhere else, I'm sure you will get suggestions from other members now that photobucket is no longer free. There is a picture icon in the row huat under the title of the thread. Click on that and it gives you the start and end command, then paste the link in between.

Brinkie winkle dance - the diagram on the left is the relay box by the bulkhead on the offside of the windscreen scuttle, black relay represents the one to take out. Leave the bonnet up. The other relay box is I think under the dash in the passenger footwell, the lines on that diagram represent the relays to bridge. Then use a screwdriver to press the switch in the bonnet lock and hold until the headlights start working in sync.

Good luck !
