I shall update with a recent picture tomorrow, as taking a picture of a black car at night is a tad challenging....

Suffice to say, the bonnet is now aligned and closing on the catch!
Well, that "tomorrow" took its time!

there's also been some minor progress.... Obviously with a now running car, there was a few obvious things to do:

Dashboard got the standard overhaul because this would not do!

Image

Image

Image

Then this had to come off (and get cleaned)

Image

So we could add some of this:

Image

and this:

Image

I let the engine get nice and warm, manually bridging out the radiator fan when needed (i don't trust thermo switches that have been stood idle for far too long!)

After everything was nice and toasty, oil was dropped and this monstrosity was removed

Image

And the drain plug got the Jiff treatment of proper-squasher-washer and PTFE (Vs "any old copper washer")

Image

And the obligatory Volvo oil filter for the extra 10BHP

Image

Coolant was drained, flushed, back flushed and some temporary coolant added. New Thermostat and Thermoswitch shall get ordered soon.

Great progress Jeff ! Looks so much better with the replacement bonnet and wing. Just realised I never posted the 'before' pics of the wing which prompted dc's long trek to collect the replacement.

Not only a missing piece of trim

Image

but rust at the bottom

Image

and a rusty hole as well

Image

So three fewer problems for the price of a wing, along with disposal of all that lacquer peel on the bonnet. Great shame the rear quarters aren't so easily changed !

During a recent visit from DCWalker, I was given a sunroof motor and told "that's for R5 - Apparently it doesn't work"

Sure enough it didn't.... and so this had to happen

Image

And the motor was replaced! But it didn't fix it.....

Worried we were looking at a snapped sunroof "legs", I broke out the multimeter. We had power going to the switch, but not coming out of the switch.

Image

They look like a sealed item, but I can confirm you can pull them apart and they're pretty much identical internally to the window switches, meaning the contacts inside just need a little bit of cleaning up and.......

Image

Little victories..... :D

We set off from Norfolk yesterday with a carload of body panels for Ben's car which we dropped of with Jeff on the way to a scrapyard almost on the Welsh border. We now have a decent driver's door for R5 - more rust disposed of ! Surprisingly, it came complete with regulator and wing mirror, so a few more goodies for the rescues. We also managed to get a splash guard for Ben's front wing which last weeks scrappie didn't have (except in pieces) plus some useful bits and pieces for the rescue cars stash. Unfortunately someone had had the head lining and the pillar trims were a pile of broken bits so no use for Jay-Kay-Em. Pleasingly, we collected another very white but otherwise decent rear cluster for a mere £10 - pity they only had one 480 ! I can see Al's going to be chained to the polishing mop for some time. He was very pleased to also get a replacement cigarette lighter socket for the Saab - for some reason they have a habit of dying and every breaker tried so far had already been robbed.

What was wrong with the old door?

Image

Image

Just a tad rotten.

Swap started, the first casualty found - Too many banging tunes perhaps?

Image

Door mirror next

Image

Sadly even the hot spanner couldn't save these - 2 out of 3 snapped clean off. Shall attempt to drill out.

Image

Then finally....the "summer look"

Image

and replacement on

Image

Still some minor things to do, like swapping over the barrel surround, weatherstrip and refit the interior, but sadly refitting the door has put a little too much strain my glass back, so I'm spending a few days resting up.

Yesterday we were off to Jeff's with a trailer again, this time empty, so we could bring R5 back here and free up a space on Jeff's drive. Once again we were tailgated by a Volvo - lights were up so it was looking in the back window. Staying in the slipstream to save on fuel perhaps ? Most unnerving to see a car that close in the mirrors.

Image

In the orchard this time after Junk the breaker moved over. Weed mat down to cut down on damp underneath - can't see the grass surviving but heyho.

Image

I'm guessing we have a space saver while Jeff is blasting the proper (super tatty) wheel.

It will have - all UK 480s did.

Whether they're still working is another matter.... ;)

I have a nice Celebration interior earmarked for it. The lack of wear and later date make working seat heaters more likely. Fingers crossed

the door is on tapered hinges, so open the door, block of wood underneath and lift with a trolley jack. Lube up the pivots in advance of course!

No progress on the car Aaron, as you guessed, the weather is to blame. Until R8 is done and comes here, R5 will have to stay with me due to lack of space at the Sanctuary. Here is a photo of the Celebration seats we are proposing to fit

Image

Ignore the seat cushion at the top of the picture, that belongs to R4. I'd show a picture of the matching side panel inserts except I cant find them, probably packed away in the garage in a fit of tidyness. Always a mistake

Those look in great condition :D
do you have the thicker pile carpet to go along with the seats or will you be sticking with the grey felt carpet for R5? I've been casually looking for some for my car for a while now.

Thats awesome, looks real good, thanks for replying i appreciate it, the car will look amazing with this in, are those side panels the door cards? And if so does that involve the dash trim that leads off the door? Thanks again :)
