Real shame - Copart is for traders only, so highly likely to head for scrapyards

That really is a shame, no one on here able to blag their way as a trader? surely a trader would see that it is worth something recommissioned

You can bid/buy from Copart, you just need to be a member.

Catch is the £100 to become a member which allows you to bid but you might not win.

This 480 is CatC so you don't need a CatB licence either.

If there was someone definitely interested, I could ask around to see if anyone was registered.

Could be really nice. Not much info online. First registered 10 January 1991. Anyone found any more info on the vehicle?

The Chalfont Volvo dealer was very close to where I was living at the time and also near the then Volvo UK headquarters at Globe Park, Marlow.

Shame it is in Wisbech. That's a real trek from most parts of the UK.

Wisbech is not too far from us, so we have been contemplating a rescue group buy. However, the website currently says no viewing due to restrictions. Jeff has emailed to find out if that has changed with the easing.

I have been looking at fees, it isn't just the £100 registration fee, there are also buyers fees. A sale at £500 has a buyers fee of £135 plus £40 to move it from the sales area to the collection area. Then there is Vat on all fees so a £500 purchase ends up at £830 with the joining fee.

History isn't encouraging either, it last changed hands in 2004, last mot Jun 2005-6 so no mot history online, and it's done 140k miles which might make it difficult to resell. To make things worse, it doesn't come up as a cat c write off. So, the question is, did it fail an mot big time just before mots started being recorded online or was it taken off the road for a more innocent reason.

If there is no viewing then I think we definitely have to pass on it. Can't risk having another breaker!

Just a thought- would a cat c write off prior to 2006 be recorded online ? - maybe went live at the aame time as mot history. hmmm

still at £800 (after taxes/add-ons etc) for a 'non runner' seems a little steep? I'd hope to sell EVA this year as a runner with MoT, and might find it hard to get > £1000 - £1300?

Looks like it failed to meet the reserve. The seller has two days to decide whether to accept the sale or not. Perhaps it will be on ebay next week.

Having failed the reserve this week, it's back in next week's auction. More soul searching......

Info gleaned from tedious terms and conditions, cat C cars can be bought by private individuals, its only the ones where a licence is needed that are trade only.
Viewing not allowed at present due to pandemic. I have asked for close up pics of the rear arches, but they aren't very good at answering emails.

It's 2 owners from new, so I'm guessing all those Volvo services detailed by Martin63 were by the first owner.

Around 1996/7 I think there might have been the first change in ownership Sylvia as the dealer that did all the servicing up until that point changed to another servicing dealer for the rest of the service history. Just a guess on my part...the owner may have moved of course. I was quite intrigued by it being a Company Car. I can't imagine too many 480s were company cars.

Actually, my turbo was a company car. Years ago it was quite common for companies to give their employees a budget and let them choose what they had. That was certainly the case with mine and I suspect any other company car 480s as well - hardly the sort of thing most employers would choose for their fleet !

True - and then by the late 1990s car allowances became the norm, making life much easier for many employers

Having talked myself out of this car last week, I weakened and had another look at the weekend. On Monday I rang Copart at Wisbech and a very nice chap said he could go out and look at the car for me and take extra pics, but I had to be a member.

Sooo, I parted with £100 only to be told that the registration process takes 2-3 days as it has to be approved. A further phone call to Copart's Head Office found another nice chap who processed my application whilst I hung on. Another phone call to Wisbech - I kept getting put through to Chester as Wisbech were very busy. Tuesday I tried again, Wisbech short staffed, back to Chester. Eventually I spoke to a young lady at Wisbech who said she had no way to send photos (?) but would look and email. I explained that I could see rust at the tops of the arches but wanted to know if there was any at the bottoms, and if so was it still reasonably solid or paper-thin ? Damn, a photo being worth a thousand words and all that... The reply came back - there is corrosion on the wheel arches. :wall: Not even a dozen words !

After considerable thought, I decided the max would have to be around £1200 with all the fees so working backwards I arrived at £900. This should allow for wheel arch replacements. One other person was bidding and £900 was their bid, so I topped it with £925 and won the auction, except that it wasn't enough to reach the reserve. Turned out that the reserve was £1400 (cloud-cuckoo land ?) so I await the seller's decision. The website asked if I wanted to meet the reserve (not a chance !) or increase my bid (definitely not) or stick with my 'winning' bid.

Had it been anything other than a turbo I'd have left well alone, but there are so few of them left. I'm quite surprised the seller didn't come back straight away with a flat refusal, but maybe the relisting fees are high, or maybe he/she just hasnt seen the result yet. Or even seen sense !

After 24 hours swinging on the pendulum of 'Want it, must save a turbo' to 'Dont want it, havent seen the wheel arches', the seller has now seen sense and accepted the bid - now it's OMG what have I done !!

Copart's fees are quite ferocious - I thought it was now illegal to charge for using a credit card but Copart have a 'card convenience fee' of just £48 !! Damn cheek, gotta start moving money now to cover my debit card payment ! I've also paid for them to deliver so that avoids their £40 charge to move the car from the holding area to the collection area. I did then have the uncomfortable thought that the driver probably wont know it's not going to be broken and might not treat it at all carefully. Hopefully the clue is that it's coming to a private address rather than a scrapyard. We wouldn't have been able to collect until Monday by which time we would have accumulated storage charges as well - they are closed Saturday and Sunday but still charge for 7 days a week!

In case anyone is wondering, this will be another one funded by me as R1 and R3 have both turned out to have problems that have taken considerable time to fix. R2 was funded by me but now bought by dc, so I can do this one. We'll obviously have to wait and see what the condition is like when it arrives before we label it R5, just hope and pray it's not beyond resale value to save it.

Funny you should say that - when I told my son R4 was coming to us for a while, his immediate response was 'Oh, so you're fostering them as well now' Maybe Wedgie Fosterhouse ?
