The black turbo has an almost identical rev counter so could you make that two please. R6 hasn't arrived yet and R7 looks fine. Of course, I'm looking at them in daylight on cars with flat batteries so I don't know if we might get sparkly backgrounds when they are up and running. If only they were parked in a neat row with easy access to the bonnets :?

It's taken me ages to realise that FOTU is the Festival of the Unexceptional - I even tried googling it! Brain cells are not abundant these days    It wasn't til I thought, hang on, isn't Jeff going to that event with us on 31st July that the light bulb came on.

My brain always connects the U to Unexpected. (Jeff knows that I will subsequently connect that to the Spanish Inquisition )

Anyway, there's three complete red/yellow clusters in my loft that need to be dismantled, those have rev counters that never peel. So either I will bring those or send them by mail.

Starting to think about R4's wish list, first and foremost 2 better doors would be a bonus. Both have rust along the bottom, but additionally one has a rather deep dent and the other has a bad patch of rust at the bottom under the window. One or both replacent doors would knock a sizable chunk off the bodyshop bill. No rush, Jeff has not long received R5 (black turbo) so if anyone comes across a white breaker please let us know.

Our recent trip to a scrappie yielded a pair of white doors and a pair of wings. Not perfect by a long way but less rust than the ones on the car so probably a better option for not much money. I keep eying up a pair of almost perfect white doors on the German ebay. Considerably more expensive, but the price includes delivery within Germany. My daughter lives there and has space in her garage. We are planning a visit by car in June, but who knows whether travel will be permitted. We'd need to be allowed into France as well so I've been dithering. Pre pandemic I would have done it, but I haven't seen her for 2 years and it might be another 2 before we can go. Not a lot of help ! We'll have to wait until nearer the time and make a decision then.

We also came back from the scrapyard with a decent but very white rear cluster to replace the broken one on R4. Al and I have taken a break from working on our new extension so we spent a day on the cars today. Al has taken both clusters out of this one, revealing the extent of the rust I could see over the tops of the lights.

Image

Whilst he turned his attention to R7, I gave the rust a scrub with a wire brush and a coat of rust converter

Image

Looks much better pending a proper job, but Jeff will need to checkout that bracket to the right as the edge crumbled away. Might need some attention with a sparkly stick !

Another happy hour later I'd cleaned the worst of the forest off the clusters using cream cleaner and 0000 steel wool so they now await the polishing mop and jeweller's wax.

Both rear clusters re-fitted with new seals from Jeff, fingers crossed it solves the leaks. At least the left one no longer has a broken top edge.

Image

Al has done a lot of polishing, but they are still a bit white. That should disappear once they have had a coat of 2-part lacquer.
My plan then is to get them wrapped with anti-UV, which should stop the lacquer peeling. A chat at the wrapping company informed me that they need to be lacquered to make them super smooth or the wrap won't stick properly. They have wrap with various depths of tint so they should be able to get them pretty close to the colour of the centre panel. Estimate is £40 per cluster. Given how hard they are to source it's a small price to pay to extend their life. Eva has recently aquired quite nasty stone damage on one of hers :cryhard: - maybe if it had been wrapped it would have saved it.

A bit more progress today:

Yukky buttons

sanded

Number plate stuck to the bumper

Image

Repro number plate mount from Wayne at WR Composites fitted

Looks a lot better.

Now to make everyone as jealous as me

Yes, that's a perfect dash surround in a Volvo 480 ! Maybe the lhd version doesnt have the same problem as ours, or maybe it's because it's only ever been touched by Volvo

Is it just me or does this look awful (apart from the mud that is) ?

Fairly certain I've got some speaker grills kicking about. Shall add them to the list!

That front end has certainly come along nicely - Excellent work! :)

Aaargh... I have plenty of speaker grills. I could have stuck more in the package I've sent to the UK.

I'm sure the next care package going to Jeff will be on the way before much longer so perhaps pop a pair in to replenish his stock
