Re: Rescue Car: R3
So another update. A few hours spent with D C Walker ( many thanks) to try and sort some problems which to a certain extent we did. Problems still exist with passenger pop up that we couldn’t resolve we believe that at some stage some of the wiring has been butchered. Thanks to Jeff for heater matrix but it was for a later model so will be returned ASAP and existing is going in for repair. In need of a heater blower resistor for an 88 model and the above pop up motor although there is a chance that a friend can repair the existing. All in all a frustrating day but hey ho that’s part of owning a wedge!
Re: Rescue Car: R3
Thanks Norm, sorry we couldn't achieve more today.
Still, on the bright side you do now have a fully functioning rear wiper and a heater temperature slide that covers the full range...
We'll get there - Jeff's sorted the bulk so it's just the niggles to get on top of now

Re: Rescue Car: R3
Today’s update. First many thanks once again to D C Walker for his time and effort. The recored matrix has been put back in ( very fiddly). The replacement pop up motor works but we are unable to sequence the lights. Still having problems with heater blower and one or two other electrical issues, so two steps forward and one back I’m afraid. Still it’s a 480 so it’s to be expected so onwards and upwards.

Re: Rescue Car: R3
Latest update on R3 (Jeff). He is currently residing at D C Walkers pamper parlour so that David can try and solve the electrical issues, the latest of which is an unknown battery drain. The last few weeks have involved a lot of head scratching and curing one problem that leads to another. Never mind still hoping he will make the Northern mini meet later this year whatever shape he is in.

One mention of unknown battery drains has got me winking like Chief Inspector Dreyfus...

Re: Rescue Car: R3
Slowly but surely we're getting there with R3.
Pop-up headlight problem was a combination of a dodgy motor and a dodgy bonnet micro-switch. Replaced bonnet lock (thanks Jeff ) and swapped motor out for my last believed-working spare and frustratingly it would go up but not back down - funny to see but not helpful Consult with Jeff, bridge the relay for a good 5 minutes this time (I'd only done a minute or so previously) and that seemed to wake the motor back up again. Now both working properly.
I think the micro-switch was also the cause of the battery drain in that it wasn't switching off the under-bonnet light.
Heating blower fan not working proved to be a VEM soldering issue - so that one's solved too. Checking all the fan related wiring revealed a very suspect earth point up behind the dash on the LHS, so I created a new one. Lo and behold, the interior lights now work as they should whereas before they were a tad random...
I've done some other minor bits and pieces while I've had the car because I can't resist doing them
So, what's left? Well... the main thing is to replace the clutch pedal with one that isn't bent - yes, that's right, it's bent and getting worse Never seen it before but perhaps it has a flaw or crack, and perhaps this was a previous problem causing the split bulkhead issues that Jeff's already worked hard to sort out. After that, R3 can return to Norman

Re: Rescue Car: R3
I can’t thank D C enough to be honest. The electrical problems were beginning to really frustrate me. The thing is that hidden underneath all it’s problems is a solid virtually rust free low mileage car. Hopefully D C is collecting another clutch pedal tomorrow amongst other bits so R3 may finally be back on the road.
Re: Rescue Car: R3
The post I thought I’d never have to write.
Despite ALL the effort and generous donations from multiple forum members, it appears that R3’s current owner has decided to strip the car for parts and send it off to the scrap yard.
I’m speechless.

Re: Rescue Car: R3
Norm, what happened? I’m shocked as to why this would end up like this.
Do you realise that members have contributed time, not inconsiderable money and parts to the rescue cars? Yes you bought it, but there was always a bit of gentlemanly agreement that you got help with it and were a bit of a custodian of something special. I’ll preempt your answer that you bought it and it’s yours to do with as you wish— legally, yes; morally, no— this is just plain wrong behaviour.
I would have expected the car to have been offered on here first before stripping a nice old ES.

Re: Rescue Car: R3
Just speechless ? I'm absolutely livid !! That's a very sound car with so little rust it's criminal to send it for scrap on that alone. Add to that all the generous parts donations that members made in order to keep it OUT of the scrapyard plus the many hours of hard work that went into sorting its problems this is just dreadful.
I must offer a huge apology to everyone who helped with the rescue for my decision to sell it to this man, thinking he would look after it. All he has actually done appears to be to neglect it and now he has stripped off all those valuable parts to sell. I hope no-one on here buys anything from him.

Re: Rescue Car: R3
Very disappointed to hear of this development. Having been involved with the early stages of rescuing this car and contributing parts and time to its restoration I really hoped it would end up going somewhere where it would be looked after.
Anyone who’s owned a 480 for any length of time will openly admit that they’re not the easiest cars to live with, and things go wrong. That’s the whole point of a community like this - you can rest assured that you’re not the first person to experience whatever the problem is, and there is always someone willing to help. I’ve been part of the 480 community for over a decade (and that’s not particularly long compared to some people!) and one of the stand-out aspects of this community is the willingness to help.
What really causes annoyance is that this isn’t an unknown car - enough community regulars, including at least the last five posters on this page, myself included, have seen, spent time with, and worked on this car, and can attest as to its provenance.
I really do hope that this isn’t the end for R3, although I fear that at this point it may be too late. The absolute least that could be done to make the situation at least a little more right would be to return all the parts that can be saved to the club so that other rescue cars can benefit from them.

Re: Rescue Car: R3
I doubt we will get anything back. Had the rescue group been offered the opportunity to buy the car back we would have done so, even if it was at the same price we sold it for. He was quick enough to contact me when he wanted to buy it, but has not been in touch with me over his decision to dispose of it. This tells me he is only interested in making money.
My understanding is that the car is awaiting collection by a scrapyard. We haven't even been offered the chance to outbid the scrappie to start the rescue all over again.

Re: Rescue Car: R3
I am quite puzzled - why would you scrap (in your own words) a ‘virtually rust free solid car’?
Although I don’t have any part to play in the forum rescue group, I am well aware of just how much effort, time and money so many members put in to keep these cars on the road.
I hope there was a bloody good reason for scrapping it, but I can’t think of one! I think the least you can do is owe the forum some sort of explanation as to why you did that.
