1992 480 Turbo

Post by Murf » Fri Aug 16, 2019 7:23 pm

Well, I found a loving new home for my GT and that freed up driveway space for this, 480 number 8 iirc πŸ˜‚

Bought from a chap 400 miles away based on some grainy photos and a vague description! I got it collected by a transport company who my mate knows. The first time I saw it was when I had to drive it 100 odd miles home.

The seller promised a set of new lights and he was true to his word, the trouble was that they were lying disconnected in the boot along with the number plates and wipers. It also had a flat battery, leaking exhaust and no petrol.
Some roadside tinkering and a new battery saw me hit the road, it was all going well until Glencoe when the cabin filled with acrid smoke πŸ˜‚. Turns out it was just the blower fan motor bearings that were dry and made the motor overheat. I just didn't use the blower as the weather was an unusually Scottish 22 degrees... Until 30 mins later when it was pishing down and the windows steamed up. I had to steal my 6 year old sons t-shirt to clear the screen πŸ˜‚.

Anyway, I made it home! I've given it a good wash and look over and it's pretty promising.

It's got 22k on the clock but has covered 55k overall due to a new speedo, according to the service history. It's been off the road and dry stored and seems to have been very well looked after over the years.
New springs/dampers/droplinks/tyres etc in the last few years.
Very minor corrosion on the rear arches, almost immaculate underneath, no corrosion on the subframe or any other favourite rot spots.

It came with an authentic Volvo tape holder and also the instruction manual and mounting points for the fabled rear window venetian blind. I'm gutted that the blind itself is missing 😨

So far I've changed the fluids, sorted the blower fan, fixed the non-working pop ups (DRL lamps missing!) Sorted the non working window washers and started undersealing the underside of the car.

It's booked for a new windscreen next week and after that it's MoT time to see what bits are broken that I haven't noticed yet 😁

Hi James, no it's a J reg. Seems to have been off the road for 3 years and before that covering 100 miles between MoT some years!

Anyway, I stuck the Turbo in for a speculative Mot today, got off fairly lightly!
Usual handbrake/headlight aim fail but slightly concerning was that it emitted blue smoke when idling. I test drove it last night with no signs of smoke but having started it again just now and driven it home from the garage it is indeed smoking.

So, could it be the crankcase breather system? It's done very low miles so hopefully unlikely to be the turbo seals.

Any ideas? 😁

As I said on Facebook, I think the MMM rule comes into play here:
Motors Must Move!

Assuming oil level is correct, getting the car nice and hot will do wonders. You’ll have assorts of crap accumulating in the exhaust that needs heating up and blowing out. I know it’s tricky as you need an MOT to get it moving, but need it moving to get an MOT.

You’ve done compression test? Given it a good service? Plugs cap, rotor?

I've not compression tested it but I've changed the oil and filter/air filter and the plugs are nearly new.

I drove it home 160 miles and did 30 miles last week before it's MoT so I would have thought that was enough to clear it's pipes out?

There was definitely no smoke during it's drive home but I think there might have been a bit after I changed the oil but that cleared quickly.

There was definitely none during the pre MoT 30 miles so I'm a bit stumped.

Would it do damage if I ran the car with the PCV removed while it idled on my drive?

Problems solved and MoT passed :D

Changed the oil to semi-synth instead of fully synth and no more smoke! Kudos to my mate Colin the genius mechanic!
Rear calipers swapped for new ones and brake fluid changed. The garage aimed my headlight and sent me home with a years ticket! 😁
I hope to drive it for a month or so until they start salting the roads up here, then mothball it until the spring.

Winter to do list:

Change the pass side wishbone bushes, TRE and ball joint.
Pass side window not working.
Reseal rear lights.
Plenty other things that I can't remember πŸ˜‚

Hoping that reseal rear lights involves new seals from Joep, NOT a bucket load of sikaflex or similar.

Add rustproofing to the list! Should be top of everyones!

But Huge congrats on the pass!

good news on the MoT

if changing wishbone bushes & Ball joint, i'd just fit a whole wishbone, they come with bushes for not muckle more than 'bare', also a ruddy sight eaiser than pressin gout the old bushes ! ! !

Thanks chaps!

I got a pair of bushes/TRE and ball joint included with the car and my friendly local garage usually press bushes in/out for me.
The driver's side had all been done before I bought it along with shocks/springs and droplinks.

I've been working my way through undersealing the whole car, it's so much easier when there is no rust to sort first.

I've also been driving the car, it goes nicely and they are such a nice place to sit/drive 😁

A couple kids came up to me in a car park the other day and told me that they loved it, their Dad said that they both loved vintage Volvo's πŸ˜‚
