Are the rear wiper issues not the usual frayed wires where they enter the boot-lid?
Emissions were fine at the last MOT...fingers crossed!
David
Probably; in fact defo! I popped EVA motor on and exactly the same
at least I have a car to compare with.
any way it's fixed now with a bit of lateral thinking . .. . . .
until the wiper/high level light fails then I'll just leave well alone, I've been into that flexible at top of hinge before and its a real PITA
It transpires that the green wire is the supply to the motor and the red is 'LIVE' when igniton s on so it's the supply to get the wiper to park.
now where else is there a live supply at boot hatch? of course the high level brake light!
but if linked direct to the brake light then brake light would also come on when wiper in operation
a diode was clearly needed an 'as it happens' I had a full wave rectifier from an old 6V transformer (actually from part of control system that was on some gas burners at Landor Cartons, when they dumped the burners I kept the 'useful-parts', NB left there in 1990
)
in effect the AC line was linked to the brake light and the + linked to the red wire.
Whilst in intermittant mode it just stops where it feels like and doesn't really bother me. after turn off it stops 'anywhere' but each time press brake pedal it moves towards 'park'
same effect when wash rear window and providing wiper is off before stop the car it will always end up 'parked' as a few seconds on brake pedal lets it slowly run home
slower a sthe rectifier has about 500 -600 ohm resistance
I was awffy impressed with my work-around and proves more than one way to skin a cat

MoT passed. . . ..
only issue was a High Lambda which slowly dropped to be in range, then took a while to get the CO to be low enough !
ruddy cold today air temperature around 3 -4 degrees and although engine fan did come on, I'm guessing that the CAT took ages to get toasty?
Now I'd always assumed that a HIGH lambda, low voltage from sensor, was lean but (in this case perversly) HIGH CO would suggest running rich. I wonder if it is worth a new lamda sensor as it could be the heater element / dodgy connection?
as previously stated lamda voltage did swing from 0.2 to 0.8 at the connector next to battery, but maybe a little slowly, it also 'appears' to have some sort of 'white washer' where sensor screws into down pipe, can't remember seeing that on EVA
but open to any suggestions

Interesting fix on the rear wiper...
Glad she passed the MOT again. At last year's initially they couldn't do the emissions test since she wouldn't warm up enough: I knew she needed a new thermostat so took that to be the cause. I put in a new thermostat with coolant change and at the re-test she was fine.
It does sound this time as if it's lambda sensor related though. Does the little fault code reader flash up anything?

yes I saw that from last year and 'hoped' the new stat was the fix
TBH not looked at the code reader, engine WAS warm enough , just not certain the CAT was . .. . .
centre hanger before fitting
hanger fitted below gear lever

So on the way home last week I realised that although I have a tow bar and a towing strop (12ft with SS hooks on each end) I don't have a rear towing eye, as took it off to fit the towbar which has a demountable ball, sadly nowhere i can think of to squirrel away within the car. The SS1 & C30 both have swan neck items that just have apair of High tensile bolts and so can get easily stowed . . ..
so here is the before
and here is after soaking in magic potion & battery charger
although I did attack it half way through with wire brush on angle grinder to free off some surface stuff
I'll give it lick of ALDI's finest metal paint (privet green . . .. .)
then bolt it in place

however I spent ages today with watering can and result..... no leaks, but sadly the water WAS coming in last week
so no idea how / why it comes in with rain but not with watering can? unless it is just that sustained rain fall gives enough time for the water to find it's way in.
to be honest I use the black mastic stuff to try and seal the hatch seal onto body/trim!!
AND along top edge of the lights, then smoothed out / wiped with a finger covered/dipped in white spirit
this seems to have cured some leakage as I can make out where the water had been running down the back of the lens holder, bur was dry last week, even although water was present!
I also found a piece of 'build notes' under the rear seat cushion
dated 9th August 1995 22:00
chassis number 'matches' the car
2871166 sequence number
480 FR LED RHD +HV +vw
I assume 480, Flame Red, Electronic Information Centre, Right hand drive, but HV? & vw ???

from what I've discovered....
Going OTT with the mastic is "ok-ish"; as long as you're using non-setting stuff; Anything that sets is going to make getting the lights out a mission. And they WILL need to come out... I've honestly not had seal problems with a decent seat of lense seals.
Water coming from the light seals drips through and into the boot floor; From there, it'll run around the outer edges of the boot flor, making it's way under the seats and into the rear footwells.
The other more sneaky one, is the wiring hatch seal. Water coming in here will either drip straight into the middle of the boot, or worse, gets inside the the rubber and follows the wiring along the inner track of the rear hatch.

oh almost the same, mine is a week earlier, 100 chassis numbers earlier, sequence number is 895
no idea why both the labels were under ONE seat??
one has LINKS (left) other has 'R .. .S' (right)
but what are codes for?

yes 'sticky' rubber-oid stuff
seems to be up near the seals/top edge of lights, might have to live with a little leak

16-08-1995 that is the last month of production. "Zitbank" literally translates to sofa... "Links" is left
"Rechts" is right. So it's a parts slip that came with the left and right rear seats.

Arthy
sorry missed your post, HVAC is 'Heating and Ventilation' for me so wondered if that was AirCon
Verwarmde, vw
I'll pass this onto a chap that I asked about HV + vw, he said the seat thing was literally 'sit-sofa'
Jeff
I'd have thought one label tucked under each seat?
100 cars per week is not exactly 'high volume' some new plants are churning out a car a minute

I'm guessing the bases were packed together, with one note doing both bases?

given the comment about air inlet manifolds
see a chocie of offerings
well that went well, can't find the photos
Jeff will say I'm copying him .. . .
but anyway see a cover that I made for the tow bar. SS 'tag plate' of course and uses an M5 button headed bolt to keep from bouncing off..
removed the original mount for socket to make easier to pass through bumper and bolted a plate underneath then added a short 'riser' to tuck the socket up next to number plate

need to clean up the ally manifold, any 'bright' ideas? steel wool/brillo-pad?

Yes, with lashing of TFR (wear rubber gloves!)

Had to look up TFR !!
I usually use white spirt or petrol
I don't smoke . .. . ..

I would advise against wire wool on anything aluminium from a metalurgy point of view. You will leave bits of iron, even ions of it, and it will cause a galvanic reaction later on and undo all your hard work.
I would suggest an acid if you remove the inlet manifold, which is probably what TFR is. If at work, I would use Pasa-gel which is basically gloopy acid. For home I have heard that cheap citric acid and caustic soda powder works wonders. Just make sure you wash to neatralise and dry it afterwards.
If you don't remove it then an abraisive without iron in it, such as Scotchbrite, will do it. Scotchbrite is basically the green scouring pad from your dish sponge. The red is a bit softer; white is too soft for this job. As the inlet manifold is rough it will need a blow down with air gun afterwards.
