James, good call about the steel wool!!

I reckon there is some industrial grade ScotchBrite kicking about

I'm a bit wary of using either acid or caustic on aluminium castings . . . .

mind you making rhubarb jam always leaves the ally jam-pan pretty sparkly , although it is full of 'windfall' apples tonight

Hi Alan

Is it just me? But I can't see any of your engine photos above - and I'm very keen to do so!

Neat with the two-bar, btw!

try it now, it seems to depend which way I click the 'copy image address' and if it comes with 'google users' somewhere then you cannot see them :?

Don't worry David, you can just look at Jeff's engine bay shots and you'll get an idea of where Alan got his ideas from  ;)

 I've seen the actual thing, remember?

Well done Alan - I think the black background silver lettering is the better approach...

Re: CeDriC new rear lights

Post by Alan 480 » Sat Jan 02, 2021 3:04 pm

this will probably upset the the purests , but given a choice of remodelling the NSR wing/bumper or adding extra illumination, thne I went for the latter.

the cars are parked within 1" of a concrete wall, (see photo) and sometimes that 1" gets less than 'a paint thickness' :-( (especially if dark outside) my Father's guide was 'as long as it's MORE than a paint thickness, all is good' :-)

so I purchased a PAIR of rear lights so it looks quite tidy (I think)

for those interested the pair were around £20 from tinterweb. H Bowers in Staffordhire
used some 16SWG to fold up a section 50mm x 30mm around a 3mm flat bar and a 4mm bolt hole with SS bolts
the ally clamps arond the existing bumper, and a bonus was that the original connector fitted into the back of the new fitting (after opened out from 1/2" to 5/8" so all can be retrofitted.

Neatly done :D

As you say, not one for the purists but since it'll help prevent you backing "my" car into the wall, I'll forgive you the adaptation!! ;)

Hope CeDriC is still running well for you!

All the best

David purists is fine, but trashing the bumper every other rweek is not worth the risk..............

I did consider (and still am) wondering about taking a mould of the LHS rear fog and recasting it in clear plastic resin? (I have a silicone moulding kit left over from work but not sure how good it would work (clarity wise), ignore the 'wrong' part number for MoT

Car is only doing a few miles as COVID has stopped better half's work, she can only do relief at one location per week

 - totally agree with your thinking!

Your idea with the LH rear fog is good though. Essentially you just want that lens but in clear plastic not red - you'd have a useful further light then...

As a bit of a purist I think this is totally fine, fits with the look of the car and helps protect it.

One upside to the black bumpers I suppose is the increased difficulty with which they are damaged

But at the end of the day, I just wish I had a garage to back into at all

Nice job!
Current Jobs to do (23/1/22):

I'd considered that but RHS wall has a rubbing strake fixed to house as drive is eight feet and that saves some paint on the RHS doors.

drive has a dividing wall down sixty feet and last thirty feet under car port is 'ticht'. Video camera is fixed to car port and powers up with a flood light as car approaches and display inside the middle cubby hole.

Better half managed to remove the Austin Rover text from the side repeaters on the SS1 using garage wall!!

Nice job!
Thanks thats really why I put a pair on, so that they give a decent match.

If I get the mould thing to work, then I'll advise and can offer them up as an 'after market' option?, my resin hardner for the Davids Fast Glass is red so I guess they'd come out 'pale pink', BUT i think there might still be 'industrial grade resin' which uses an MEK peroxide which is clear, need to see if the resin is still liquid and the MEK hasn't gone 'off' as last used years ago on floor/tub of SS1
