I think it should be alright for the moment, but could be something to consider soon, how hard are they to find?
Thank you very much for the offer though, I will get back to you when the time to change them comes around

They are an easy size to find. I was just passing on a recommendation rather than selling them! :D

Having examined the engine today, and following jamescarruthers' advice, I had a look at the throttle bodies, they are the ovoid shape with apparently means I have a B18E engine, good news as that was the engine I was after!

a few other enigmas with the car is a mysterious aerial in the top corner of the boot screen:

I also went over some of the rust spots with Kurust, the results of which remain to be seen

still no luck with the speedo, although the sensor has been located, and a WD'd what looks like the connectors that Arthuy posted earlier

That looks like an old car-phone aerial to me...

Are there any signs of one having been mounted in the car at some stage? I think the genuine Volvo ones were mounted on the left side of the dashboard but a likely place would also be the left hand side of the lower centre console. Any screw holes anywhere to suggest a bracket has been fitted?

The strange bracket you have is possibly a cd changer or the equipment for the car phone. Would have been a big unit.

You will need to get a multi meter on the cable to test the speedo.

Good thinking Arthuy - I've had another look at the picture and I reckon it would certainly be a contender for a car-phone bracket...

looking at the dash, there is a small light labelled "cruise"
Image
did all cars have this or just the ones with cruise control?
while on the subject of extras, there is what looks like brackets for a car phone at one point

Cruise would have been an option (and a now, very desirable option to have!).

Deffo a phone kit; if you like I’ve a classic period Nokia car kit available (it came out of mine!)

Yep - that answers the aerial and bracket questions.

All early 480s had the cruise light there although it was only ever a rare option. It disappeared after 2 or 3 years anyway to be replaced by an old catalytic converter symbol, even before the cars had them.

thanks for clearing that up, got hopeful for a moment that I had a rare feature, but apparently not

I think I still have a centre console without holes in it.

Happy to pass it on for the cost of postage.

Ha  and sadly I think the warning light was about the only component of the entire cruise control system that was fitted - and I don't think it even had a bulb in it!

Thak you jifflemon, I would like to do that at some stage, but right now the priorities are to get the bodywork, speedo, and radio/cassette/aerial sorted, but after that, why not?
many thanks, ill let you know when the time comes

New Update, first in a while

Yesterday, it was decided to get on with trying to fix the car's issues, as it was looking miserable sat in the rain for weeks on end.

first port of call was to try and ascertain the source of the wet passenger front footwell and wet drivers side rear seat and footwell - very strange that these areas were sodding wet, while the headlining and other areas were dry. we did not find the source, so have reinforced the seals with electrical tape - new pinstripes! I cannot imagine how the water is getting in, as it is in these specific places where small ponds appear, but I can't find the source

also fixed was the Aerial! now whirring happily up and down, however the Radio just shows a blank green screen, does anyone know what to do from here? also, when it asks for the code, how would I enter it?

also, I need to find one of these for the pop-ups, I am tired of fixing them all the time, only for the passenger side to flip down again...

For wet footwell I'd check that the drain pipes in the front scuttle are clean. Also, I think a car leaking from the boot area (much more likely) that is parked in an nose-up direction can end ‎end up with wet front footwell.

Regarding the code, you might be lucky and have the code on a credit card sized card in the handbook pack. If it is the original radio your Volvo dealer should be able to tell you the code based on the VIN number. Take some ID and the V5 and hope that the parts guys take pity on you. I got my key code this way.‎
