Next problem.....The full beam is not 'clicking-on' and staying on, they work if you hold the lever back but it won't hold on it's self, any ideas?

Also, the horn has stopped working, not checked the fuse though....

Cheers!
horns could just be a dicky connection atthe horn, be prepared for the horn 'spring' mount to be goosed, I replaced both with a nice bit of stainless from a name plate, only cos I have astack of them about playing card size :-)

does the stalk not just 'toggle' between 'main beam' & 'dip'? so long since I drove it in the dark can't mind on . .. . .

dangerous to think about it when hoppng from one car to the other, eg reverse is in three differnt places and methods of 'detent' as well :)

The horn is also controlled by a relay in the CEM (necessary to sound the burglar alarm). You can use the CEM self test to check if the horn relay functions. Don't do this late at night or you will "befriend" a lot of people in the close vicinity :P

There are two separate ways of the ‎main beam switch working.

Latching on and toggling main beam ‎to stay on until selected off

Momentary action. With headlights up, when the momentary action is broken it isn't such a big deal as you can latch the main beams on as above. With the headlights down, the momentary action flashes the long-range lights.

It is quite common to have one function broken. I think it is a UK MOT fail if the latching one doesn't work. Annoyingly you used to be able tobuy the indicator switch from Volvo about 5 or so years ago and it wasn't expensive. ‎

just been out in the dark and on ours the transiton from 'dip' to 'main-beam' and back again is simple from pull back briefly, release and the front lights stay at whatever it is either main or dip, BUT this was with lightsUP and NOT on that silly 'dim-dim' so I reckon that the 'latching' is done by a RELAY down in the CEM ? ?? :?

With the lights down, are you able to flash the long range lamps?

It just the main beam holding on for me, I'm sure it worked when I first bought it, I've not given up on it working again, since most things that have failed have sprung back to life!

as the 'driving lights' flash then your switch gear is OK , otherwise the signal wouldn't get to the CEM ?. ? .?

try pulling ALL the relays under the triangular cover, (one at a time to avoid confusion) clean up the spade terminals, and reinsert, you never know it might be all that it needs.

or if you have spare relays WITH THE CORRECT pin-out, try them!

wish you luck!

The Aux Driving Lights (next to the DRL) are controlled by the CEM. Main Beam and Flash in the Popups are not.

Just to confirm operation. Gently pull the lever towards you and letting go Flashes the lights. If you pull a little harder towards you you will hear a click and the Main Beam Lights will stay on when released (the Dipped filament in the bulb will go out, unlike Flash which uses both filaments). To turn off pull towards you again till the click is heard then release.

If the normal Dipped Lights are working the relay for Main Beam (in the popups) is OK as it’s the same relay and the switch is your most likely problem.

Therefore if Dipped Lights are also not working its most likely the relay as Flash is a different circuit and does NOT use a relay.

Sorry only just seen these replies.
The dipped beam works, the flash works. It's just the main beam doesn't 'hold' on.
I'm guessing it's the switch.

On another note, I have solved the intermittent pop-up problem, I took the DRL bulbs out give everything a good clean and all is working perfectly now, hurray!

Glad you've sorted the pop-ups - it's amazing how critical the DRLs are!

I think you are right with the switch being at fault for the light flash/main beam - I had this on my very first 480 and a new switch (and back in those days - 1993'ish - it was a new switch, from Volvo, ouch!) solved the problem. Think I have a couple of spares which you'd be welcome to try although I cannot guarantee they work properly (they should do though...).

That's sounds great David.
How much would you like for one?

Thanks Nigel

I am a bit wary of asking good money for something I don't positively know is in full working order. How about this - if you let me know your address I'll post it over to you; if it doesn't work, then no charge, if it does, then £10?

David
