Thanks Jeff! Would love some but not quite sure when I'll be that way. Would be tempting to pop by if I get the car MOT'd before the mini meet.‎

Basically I'm back on the 7th and we all meet on the 12th.‎

We'd be interested in a cleaning demo as well. How about 12th May ?

There has been a huge amount of work done since the last update.

I have to confess that *my* work stopped once I finally got it to start and drive once again as I've left the country for my job and wont be back until May 7th. The baton has been taken by the tame village mechanic who is my friend and he has really ran with it!

When the MOT was done on the E-reg car I showed them a picture of this car's windscreen and they've said that there is a good chance of it passing as the rules have just been significantly relaxed-- basically is it in my field of vision, yes/no. So, the plan is to get everything done except the window and see if I can get to the May meet with it. I am absolutely itching to get back and see it and most importantly to drive it!

I had had:
  • four tyres (Avon ZT-5)
  • timing belt and tensioners
  • water pump
  • radiator
  • repair to lower hose using piece of new upper hose
  • coolant change
  • gearbox oil change (I went with Brinkie's Elf stuff for now)
  • service completed (fuel filter now done too)
  • hand brake cables
  • brake pipes (not all, but certainly the rear) and hoses (all)
  • brake discs/pads (bought the Ultimax package from EBC... will report back as to whether or not they're any good)
  • rear wheel bearings
  • door hinge and check strap welded up
  • number plates
  • heater temperature slider
So, Duncan sent me these two pictures today and I am absolutely blown away by how shiney it is! I had a brief clean when on the back of the recovery Transit van but this is something else! I am so pleased he's took the time and thrown some T-cut and elbow grease at it to remove the stripes it has acquired from the leaking corrugated roof of the garage.

Fingers crossed this one and Keith's earlier one will be joining you on May 12th.

We are waiting on parts deliveries on
  • refurbished callipers (BCS Automotive: stripped, replaced seals, painted)
  • gas struts (SGS Engineering: boot ones replaced, wouldn't re-gas; pop-ups re-gassed)
  • headlight washer three-way valve and joiner tube (universal stuff to replace damaged valve and cut pipe)
Then we will be desperate need of tracking alignment: the front driver's tyre had near-full tread on one side and canvas carcass on the other!

I'd like to get the radio working before a long drive too, even if it gets a temporary aftermarket one which I have sitting in the garage. I've also got some ancient Kenwood tweeter/mid/crossovers in the garage which I never got round to fitting to the other car. Unlike all other UK cars, this early car (along with Keith's) must have had no speakers as standard-- currently some crap looking 90's Sharp items and still no tweeters which make such a difference to the sound.

Before I come home, I might be meeting Brinkie in Amsterdam and we at get a few parts from Orlando's 480 heaven for the interior and the aux. water pump bracket

Have also requested rear light seals and DRL lenses (melted(!) on this one from corrosion on terminals generating heat, rather than gone dull!) from Joep.

If not, a little trip to Lake's should hopefully yield a couple of bits. I'm going to call tomorrow to request that they don't squash the last 480 in there!

And dare I say it....... an MOT?

Oh, yeah forgot to mention that! Thanks again to you two and was pleased you got to see it; sorry I missed you but really appreciate the effort to come and drop it off.

Although the door is welded up, the inner handle snapped from the previous owner wrestling with it to shut the floppy door.

great effort. :D :hopping:

the inner handle WILL be an MoT fail, you have to be able to open the door from inside, opening the window doesn't count

Got off long flight home and no sleep but did take it for an MOT yesterday lunchtime.‎

Failed:
‎Not enough reserve travel on handbrake (fixed)
Headlight adjustment (I will unseize today and replace the screw head cups as necessary)
‎Windscreen cracked (so much for the relaxed new regulations!)

I'd been awake for two days at this point so my mate took the window out last night and today‎ we're going to tackle the rust. New screen booked for Friday.

Only unpleasant surprise is that I found the front L/H engine mount is broken. Didn't really show itself until driving. I'm attempting to get a replacement but it is still driveable should this be the only thing stopping me coming on the 12th.‎

It drives very nicely apart from that. Engine is lovely and smooth and pulls well.‎

As you have taken the old screen out did you get a discount?

If so and if you don’t mind me asking what will you be charged? Would like to know for when the time comes.

Plan A went wrong as the guy who was coming Friday couldn't get a screen. ‎Plan B was a 7hr round trip to Durham to collect a screen (£150) and have it fitted by same guy (don't know price). Window was from here: http://windscreens4sale.co.uk/product/v ... brand-new/

Plan C: More ringing round found another company for more money‎. Window is £225+VAT fitted. I am going to double check today to see if they really did get the screen.‎

Good idea about asking for discount‎. He wants cash anyway so I'll see what he says when presented with a nicely painted frame that he doesn't have to do any work to or remove the old screen.

In the past when this wasn't so urgent, the cheapest quote I got was £180. It was either with National or Autoglass. Either way that wasn't going to work as National can't come for weeks and now said they can't get a screen and Autoglass "temporarily" are only doing insurance work.

I'm off for a screenless MOT today with my goggles on! Should be fun! ‎

If it all goes wrong, I have to go back to plan B and get myself to Durham. Really not looking forward to that if it does happen.‎

I love Classic Car insurance. Added this car to current car's policy with Footman James for £32!‎

When I looked Autoglass quoted me over £300. Didn’t really look any further as it’s going to be a while before I need it I just wanted an idea.

I’ve never understood normal multi-car insurance advertising a 10% discount for second car. You can’t drive two cars at once so it should be 90% discount on the lowest risk car just in case it’s stolen or spontaneously combusts on the driveway.

MOT is passed. Need to brush my hair though! Advisories: minor leak on exhaust and "no front screen fitted at time of re-test".

Windscreen is installed and I'm good to go! The price wasn't great at £258 (£215+VAT). For future reference, you could save money by buying the £150 one from up north and then paying for install only which I got quoted for £50 to only fit.‎ A little bit more, but all I could arrange for our 12 May deadline.

Even had time to ‎do some little jobs like change the DRL lenses, fix the radio and install a roller blind boot cover which I've had in the cupboard for 5 years. Had a go at dying Skip's old green mats grey but it looks pretty crap! ‎

So.... I'm coming tomorrow and am absolutely delighted!

Unfortunately, due to one of the UK's many useless courier companies a next-day delivery of the engine mount is now on day two. It is "out for delivery" so fingers crossed it will come in time. Either way, I think the car will be okay, just no hard acceleration. If I'd have known that UK Mail were so useless I'd have driven to London to collect the part. ‎

On my way to get the tracking done, I've just driven past a beautiful light blue G-reg turbo parked up. Can't believe it! Will get a photo on the way back if it's still there. What a great coincidence!‎
