I can now see everything up to 13th Aug 17 and 1st April on. Nothing in between
ditto

PS oil leaks are good, saves rust developing

Sub-frame, front suspension and steering rack are now out.

Engine mount must be an Auto design.

Image

As can be seen cracked at the top, don’t think that's anything to worry about.

Sides have some minor cracking but looks generally ok and there is a gap underneath the metal and lower bit of rubber which I take it is in case the sides break and it stops it resting on the metal while you drive to the stealer and have the mount replaced.

Now the mount is made of unobtainium was thinking of reinforcing it by filling said gap with polyurethane as seen on the never wrong internet.

What does everyone think?

From what I've learnt recently, this design lasts forever. It is the later oil filed one that fails. You can likely leave it and it will be fine in your car.

tend to agree. . . .
whilst not 'pretty' might worth doing when box is out? only you can confirm. and a wedge of some PU can't do any harm

I may have gone a little further than originally planned.

Image

Not a nut, bolt, clip or grommet left in the engine bay.

Goes to show what time and no money for the car does for you (after my list of daily chores is complete of course ;) ).

Well it’s now ready for some surface rust treatment in a few places and then painting (the engine bay that is, not the car).

I’ll be glad I went this far in the end, I hope. :wall:

Just a quick update.

A new job and a holiday have kept progress down.

Engine bay rust treated and painted and subframe wire wheeled and partly sand blasted but at least I’ve been able to get more parts and tools for when I do get more time.

Glad to hear its progressing nicely. Keep up the good work and maybe we'll see it at a meet next year.

Thought it was about time for another update. Sadly little has progressed due to new job giving me very little time in more ways than one.

Engine bay looks good and now has stone chip protection in the area most vulnerable.

Image

I have also decided to take renovation one step further and been experimenting with home rust removal and plating on parts that can’t be easily/cheaply replaced with new.

After

Some have come up really well others not so but still ok. If the rust has eaten into the surface and made it uneven it is never going to be perfect.

I also now have a pile of new parts waiting to be fitted when it all goes back together.

The only other progression is the cylinder head is off and dismantled and valves have been cleaned.

Before

Image

Arrow is what I hope was causing a sticking valve, it was certainly a b***h to remove.

After

Image

The valve clearances are all within spec although one is right on the limit but can’t find supplier of shims to replace anyway.

Picture only show 4 but all 8 have been done.
