1st time with a lady called Volvo!

Post by lee-bob » Fri Jun 23, 2017 6:14 am

Hi all, just bought a 480 turbo.always loved them and their quirky looks.been trying to get my friend to sell it me for a few years now and finally I broke his resolve.ao I now own a 1992 model, which has lots of paperwork and history with it.its a a blue/grey colour which needs new rear arches.managed to get it for a decent price and another £100 on top for him to fit new cambelt kit and rear brake pipes! It is also fitted with modified vw coilovers fabricated by my friend who is an engineer/fabricator by trade.wht are your thoughts on modified vs original? All thoughts-advice welcome as I know from my other classic car that some views are original all the way or you get ostracised.hope to hear from members soon, ciao for now

First of all a warm welcome to the forum - we look forward with great anticipation to seeing your car and what you're doing with it!

We are a relatively small community and there are increasingly few cars around, so as far as modifications go I don't think anyone will have anything bad to say since it's another car being cared for and kept on the road vs ending up being scrapped and/or stripped for parts. Just don't go pulling out the engine and sticking it in an R5!

There's a chap on here by the name of Jeff who is doing a pretty comprehensive restoration job on a turbo at the moment, you might find his thread to be of interest: http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/v ... 19&t=35212

Welcome!

Congratulations on becoming a 480 owner - ahead of you lie the pleasure of driving one of these great little cars, as well as the pain and frustration of grappling with their quirky ways. However you'll find a lot of help and support on here because we have all been there ourselves.

As for modification, Jaster is quite right - no-one on here will mind what you do as long as you are keeping a 480 alive and well. There are people on here (like me) who have done everything they can to fit accessories and extras but all within what was "original", and others who have modded away to their heart's content. We're not picky, we're not critical, all we all want to do is enjoy our cars.

So - keep us posted; let's see some pics!

Bienvenu

I took delivery of Skip a few months back and the road has been bumpy (to say the least), however I sort of knew what I was letting myself in for so, except a few "surprises" it is a real privilege to own one :)

Welcome aboard and lets see some pics!

I remember seeing one 480 that had coilovers - My concern would be the rears - I'm going to guess its using modified spring cups on the beam?

Cranna has coil overs on the rear, fitted onto trailing arms. . . .

Yeah, I'm just wondering about the rear... See normally coil uses the top mount for locating the spring, but the rear of Volvo doesn't work like that, there's no "real" strength in that top shocker mounting, hence why I'm curious to see how they do it.

I'm more worried about the trailing arm!

We'll maybe get some info if arm was beefed up ?

Well good news folks,Volvo now has an mot, just taxed it and fitted mbc, straight pipe exhaust and with a coat of NATO green and BBS reps looks pretty good but then I'm biased! I will get some pics up as soon as I get chance as my iPhone camera doesn't work.
