Life with my 480 ES and how I caught the 480 bug!

Post by phil480 » Wed Sep 05, 2007 6:14 pm

Hello everyone, I think this diary thing is a great idea. So here is my story of my 480.

The first time I saw a 480, I must have been about 16 or 17, I was out walking down a road near my house, as I was walking past a house, the car on the driveway caught my eye. It was an unusual looking car that kind of reminded me of the DeLorean off Back To The Future. As I got nearer and saw the badge on the back of the car, I seen the very familiar Volvo logo. I thought it was an unusual style of car for Volvo. I kept on walking to wherever it was I was going, and thought no more of it. I don't remember seeing one for a long while after that. I do remember seeing a Honda aerodeck and thinking, hmmm that looks kind of like that Volvo I saw, exept the Volvo looked better.

A few years later, My car at the time was a Rover 25.

Despite the numourus faults, I put up with the Rover for about a year and half, then I decided enough was enough, too many faults, Rover had just gone bust, the Rover has to go. I was browsing at some other cars, when I remembered that Volvo. I searched various websites trying to find what it was called. It wasn't long before I found it and was reading about the spec, then I REALLY wanted one!. I got an insurance quote for a 2.0 480. It was £200 cheaper than my 1.4 Rover!! So that was the decider, my next car would finaly be a 480. I spent weeks on ebay waiting for one to come up at a good price, but in good condition. Finaly, in October 2006 a White K reg 480 ES came up at £475 Buy It Now, in reasonable condition and good history, 95k miles. The car was near Ludlow, Shropshire. I asked the seller some questions regarding electics etc, and apart from the sunroof not closing properly, everything worked. So I clicked the Buy It Now button, and that weekend me and my Dad drove over to Shropshire in the Rover. We met the guy who was selling it and he shown me around the car. I was so surprised at the extra little things I didn't know about, like the glowing key hole and the Info Centre. I was so exited driving it home, I said to myself "I finaly have a 480.....and IT'S FANTASTIC!!" When I got home, I got straight to work on cleaning the inside and out. Then I read through the manual and learned some other stuff, like how you can close the windows and sunroof from the door key hole. A few days later I put her in for MOT, passed no problem.

Througout the winter the slightly rusty wheel arches were slowly getting worse. In April 2007 I got a quote off a body worker for £400 for all 4 arches. So I had that done a few weeks later, and what a difference it made to the look of the whole car! She looked so much better.

Other than the wheel arches, there hasn't been too many expensive repairs that needed doing, apart from a complete exhaust system and a new wheel bearing. Other than that she's drove like a dream.

If driven casually, I find the 480 surprisingly good on fuel. In August I filled the tank up, drove 100 miles to Skegness, did plenty of miles driving around up there throughout the week and drove 100 miles back all on the same tank of petrol and I still had 1/4 tank left.

Image

I have had 2 breakdowns, both with the same problem. Part of the distributor cap melted and was stopping fuel getting into the engine. I had the cap and a rotor arm replaced, so far, no more problems there.

In the past week I have discovered the greatness of this forum. I actually registered back in May but totally forgot until now. I have seen some fantastic dash styling and loads of other things I want to get done on my 480. So I'll probably be posting more very soon.

Whist browsing on eBay the other day I came across a seller who was breaking a 480 ES fairly local to me. So I got in touch and arranged to collect some parts off it. I hoped to get a pair of rear clusters if they were good enough, but somebody had beaten me to it. There wasn't much left of the car when I got there:

This was the first time I had seen a 480 in this state. It was indeed a sad sight. The feeling in my heart wanted me to take what was left of the whole car and restore the life back to it. And I would have, if I had the transport, space to keep it and the money to do it!! One 480 is enough at the minute. But once I can afford to move into a house with a garage or at least a driveway, I will definatley consider buying a second 480 (Turbo! :D, and in black!).

For now I did manage to salvage a pair of very good condition front light clusters, front fog light, info centre and fan speed switch, various bulbs and the blanking plates for the footwell lights. All for bargain £50 :)

So I have a few little jobs to do at the weekend. Including taking the 480 on a trip to Heathrow to pick friends up from the airport. Hope they ain't got too much luggage

At the weekend I had my dash in bits replacing a few bulbs, most of which I didn't know they existed, as they have never worked. There was the 2 in the heater controls, the one in the hazard switch, one in the headlight knob and the green glow halo around the ignition. I also made up some footwell lights and fitted them. All in all a vast improvement on the interior.

Today I had a nice 200 mile round trip down to Heathrow and back, smooth run all the way. No other 480s spotted on the M1/M25, mind it was between 5 and 10 am on Sunday morning.

Just a brief update, the 480 passed it's MOT last week with no problems at all.

I needed an ABS Sensor to replace a faulty one. I looked all over the scrap yards and breakers and Volvo spares specialists. Nobody had one, in the end I had to go to the local Volvo dealer and order one. £85 inc vat!!!! For a piece of wire with a little sensor on the end! Anyway, my ABS works now and I haven't got an amber warning light staring at me from the dash.

So all is well, with the milage now over 107k on the clock. Not much for a Volvo, I know.

Just debating weather or not to swap my current front clusters for some clear ones I have, I think they look better than the orange ones.

Latest update on my 480. It's hit 108k miles this weekend. I visited club member Lee to purchase a front spoiler off him. I got that screwed on, think I'll get it sprayed white.

Also I found these storage bins on eBay:

Nice and simple modification. I have also installed footwell lights. I wanted them to have a green glow to them, so I cut out some plastic from an xBox 360 demo game case and inserted them into the lens. It worked quite well.

My main problem now is this:
Image
The bracket thing has corroded and the plastic arch thing that holds the mud flap on has fallen off. So I need to get it welded back up.

Ok, here's the latest, at 110,000 Miles. I've been away for a bit, and the 480 had to be taken off the road for a few months because of Gordon Browneye and his expensive taxes. Anyway, since then it's back on the road, and I've just had it serviced with no problem other than the rear shock absorber casing has gone, which was like that when I got it.

It's all ready for a trip to Devon in a couple of weeks time. I can't wait to be driving it around on Dartmoor :hopping:
