My Travels with my 480...

Post by muddyfox470 » Tue Jun 26, 2007 6:48 pm

After recently acquiring a 480 on a bit of a whim in March 07 a mate and I decided to take it around Europe (as apposed to going on a trip to America where we wouldn't have been able to drink or drive :( )

My ownership up to now has been well documented in these here forums, and since owning it, nothing with the car has gone majorly wrong, and so far it has been a love relationship with the car - even my mates who originally hated it are warming to her quickly now!

I bought the car for £300 and have fixed the pop-up and the info centre both of which weren't working when I bought her and done the aforementioned servicing to put in some new oil and parts to keep her ticking over nicely.

After bringing her up to Durham she got broken in to and more recently she was the poor victim of some idiot driver reversing into her almost perfect body.

Anyway back to the European tour plans. We depart on the 3rd of July from Dover to Dunkerque, quickly heading into Belgium where we will stay for a few days soaking up the good beer and the cows. We'll head through Germany (again no definite plans) but we want to visit Waldorf and Worms purely for comedy value; we decided to avoid the big cities for the start of the holiday :)

Then we are going to be in Prague from around 10th July before heading down through Cesky Krumlov (to visit a nice local brewery - Eggenberg)

After a long day we shall bomb it down through various countries (600 miles) until we get to Bol (on the island of Brac) in Croatia, for a week. For the sun sand and s... Here we just hope to relax, soak up the sun and enjoy the clean waters.

The we shall head back up north to Bled in Slovenia for the picturesque views and for a bit of walking :)
We'll go through Italy stopping off wherever will offer us a room (or a suitable camp site) to the south Coast of France, through Menton, Monaco and to Marseille.

From there we will head north over the Millau Viaduct to the Puy de Dome in the Auvergne - basically we just want to see the mountains from the Volvic ads and do some walking :)

After that we will head over to a small little island on the west coast of france where my nan lives (Ile d'Oleron (opposite La Rochelle)) however by this time the summer holidays will be in full swing and places, roads and stuff will get pretty packed...
After a week of surfing lessons we head home, up north back to Durham to sort out our student accommodation.

I will try and keep you posted on our travels and I will try to document and show as many photos as possible of my mate, my car and myself on our journey around europe. In total this is going to take us about 6 weeks, and hopefully we won't encounter too many problems, bad drivers and the like. One thing I have learnt (from Matts vid) is not to go to the Nurburgring :D

Thanks and lets hope the 480 and I can live together for many years to come (even my mum likes it which is an achievement :) )

Thought I better update any of you that are interested in some of the sights we have visited...

Been extremely warm weather, and have had to top up the oil a few times, but otherwise everything has been working really well, even in temps around 45 degrees...

As I cba posting seperate links, here are just a few photos in this small album here (make note that we only visited the most important towns and villages...)

Well as I have had a bit of time to spare over the summer holidays (after my work placement) I have been doing some light tinkering with my car.

This has included sealing the rear clusters (but still a little water is coming through)
Getting new tyres all around (to be fitted on Friday) - Toyo CF1's I settled for at £43.50 fully fitted a corner - I thought she deserved a treat to get new tyres all around :)
Took her in for a mini service and she's going to get a new link bar and bush to the rear nearside. They insisted on changing the oil and filter, but they didn't want to touch the fuel filter :( [I don't have a ramp or pit to work underneath the car]
Lots of general cleaning and taking the car to bits.
Thanks to Jim, got new seatbelt buckles (as both of mine had been slammed in the door), got some new switches / knobs to pretty-up the inside of the car.
Torn out the rear trim to get a proper look at what is happening around the back, and try and find the leaks once and for-all but haven't been able to stop all of them :(
So now going to try and sort out the moon-roof drainage issues once I can find some suitable pipe connections
Sealed the front lights to help prevent the misting up I've been getting recently (trying to source a passenger side orange indicator unit)

But on the side, whilst working down in London for 8 weeks upon my return I was gutted to find some nasty scratches over my car, and one massive line of scratched over the front of the bonnet - you would not imagine how gutted I was at how careless my parents are.
