that is a shame, the body seemed to be good nick.
Funny how modern classics like the 480 are not financially worth repairing yet E type jags and escorts in stripped and scrap condition sell for telephone number prices.
got to do what is best for you.

Re: Quick decline into the life of a 480 owner
The bodywork was deceptive when you remove the plastic scuttle at the front base of the windscreen there was a surprising amount of rust I didnt even know about. The top corner of the windscreen would be a body shop repair and cost oodles of money probably requiring the windscreen to be removed in the process the rear boot space would need patched with metal . The rear bottom (metal) lip of the rear hatch would need a strip of metal welded in the door on passenger side could be faked up but in all honesty is begining to rust the top of driver door would need to be smoothed down and rust treated and repainted. The carpet underlay would need to be removed and dried out . And so it goes on I couldnt in all honesty fake it up sell it on . The problems are just too many and reoccuring especailly when you consider that this car is my daily driver. Its the car or I cycle everywhere and when I dont use the car my daughter does so it is always in use every day .

The 480 was designed with planned obsolescence in mind. The car lasts about 20 years and then falls apart.arthuy wrote:Funny how modern classics like the 480 are not financially worth repairing yet E type jags and escorts in stripped and scrap condition sell for telephone number prices.
I was shocked yesterday about the amount of rust appearing at the bottom of the best of my two 480's (1994 Vase Green GT). It wasn't rusting through, but really needed treatment on several places, otherwise it would in a couple of years. These cars don't last long once exposed to the elements.

Ah well at 1300 tomorrow the insurance is transfered from the little 480 forever
After that on Friday all the important parts that can be discretely removed will be taken off for sale.
and biffo will be consigned to the volvo heaven and cubed.

What?? I was really shocked to read You are out of the 480 scene, but fully understand the reasoning. It has been a privillege to know You here on the forum and benefit from Your knowledge and advise (and the spareparts I have needed over the years).
I wish You the best
Cheers
Chris

A C30 and a V50 - so the next generation finally arrives at 480 Central...
I assume that V50 is your replacement for Biffo Jim; looks nice!
Sad days though - just like to repeat Chris's comments and put something formally on record: thanks for all your help over the years, and albeit only as a link through a forum and a valuable source of assistance, it's been a pleasure knowing you!
All the best
David

Those wheels look awfully familiar... Did they come up with Jamesy's 480 by any chance??
They're off my 460!
Oh well, sad to see the end of an era is nigh.
Best of luck with your new direction, Jim. Hopefully you'll be able to take it easy now!

"If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical fault!"
Hammers can't fix a 480!!!
